Hey JD, I'd probably ask your vet about doubling up on the fish. They should just be able to tell you on the phone and you can tell them your ingredients list from your bag and then figure out the correct dosage. I hope the new food helps, glad he likes it! </div></div>

Yes very.

The lady at the store (the Doggy Store) tried to steer me to a more expensive food (I forget the name) I had asked her what food was better Taste of the Wild or Natural balance.

Thanks JD. I am trying to think of the name of these vitamins my parents used to buss over the dog's food. I'm sure it will come to me soon.

Pretty dog Tulip! Love the color! I would be leery about adding vitamins to a good brand dog food. That is what my vet told me 20 years ago, they have the vitamins in. However, some omega 3 and things like yogurt added are beneficial but I'm not sure how much for each size dog is advised. There are so many powders and things, I would just ask before doing.

I have been adding acidophilus to my dogs food, breaking open capsules and mixing it in. It's just easier for me than having to stop at the store for yogurt. The acidophilus is pretty much the same thing, and if the dog doesn't like yogurt the capsules opened and poured on the food is a great way to give it to them!

Effects of probiotic Lactobacillus acidophilus strain DSM13241 in healthy adult dogs.

Waltham Centre for Pet Nutrition, Waltham-on-the-Wolds, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, LE14 4RT, UK.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate viability of a probiotic strain of Lactobacillus acidophilus in a dry dog food, determine its ability to survive transit through the gastrointestinal tract and populate the colon, and assess its effects on intestinal and systemic parameters. ANIMALS: 15 adult dogs. PROCEDURE: Dogs were sequentially fed a dry control food for 2 weeks, the same food supplemented with &gt; 10(9) L. acidophilus for 4 weeks, and the control food again for 2 weeks. Fecal score was assessed daily, and fecal and blood samples were collected for enumeration of bacterial populations and measurement of hematologic variables. RESULTS: Recovery of L. acidophilus from the supplemented food was 71% and 63% at the start and end of the study, respectively, indicating that the bacteria were able to survive manufacture and storage. The probiotic bacterium was detected in feces via ribotyping and RNA gene sequencing during the probiotic administration phase but not 2 weeks after cessation of administration. Administration of the probiotic-supplemented food was associated with increased numbers of fecal lactobacilli and decreased numbers of clostridial organisms. There were significant increases in RBCs, Hct, hemoglobin concentration, neutrophils, monocytes, and serum immunoglobin G concentration and reductions in RBC fragility and serum NO concentration. <span style="font-weight: bold"> CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE :</span> <span style="font-weight: bold">These data indicate that L. acidophilus can be successfully incorporated into a dry dog food, survive transit through the canine gastrointestinal tract, and populate the colon and are associated with local and systemic changes. I feed my dogs Natural Balance and also cook for them. Dottie hasn't had a seizure in 10 months! It's gluetin free and I believe that's what was causing the seizures. My dogs love the duck &amp; potato. It's a quality food.

Thanks for the article and the compliment. I will try the pills since she clearly does not care for the taste of plain yogurt.

I had never heard you should not add vitamins to a dog's food. That's basically what the powdered ShowStopper is that I add to her food.

I did think of the name of vitamin my parent's added. (Well, I'm lying, I had to call them.) It was flax seed oil pills. I know it contains omega fatty acids but I am not sure what else.

I have never tried the Natural Balance but I recall that the ingredient list looks good.

I tried the cooking thing but just couldn't do it consistently. Mainly boiled chicken and rice with ground beef and stuff like that. Sometimes a few carrots and stuff chopped in but I felt like I was not keeping her diet balanced and frankly, I got tired of cooking two meals.

Both humans and dogs alike, too much of some vitamins will cause problems. Vitamin A is one that can be toxic if given too much of, so I'd check with a vet before supplementing just to be safe.

My little Roxy (Scottish Terrier) has had a terrible time with her pancreas, and she had always been on good food (Royal Canin dry food), and she is only 1 and a half years old. After a battery of tests and medicine and ruling out cancer, I have had her on the Blue Buffalo Co. wet food (any flavor is her favorite) along with only treats that are wheat and grain free. I like the Blue Buffalo diet for her because any flavor is under 6% fat and high in protein. It has all natural meat products (no bone or blood meals), vegetables, and has totally turned her around.

I, like others have also added natural yoghurt (balkan style)to her diet twice a day!
