Getting your pet a mate

This is a pretty serious topic for me. I want to talk about having more than one pet in the home.

Now in the early 90s, I had a male and female dog and I swore I would never have a male a female again after the female went in heat. The mount of whining, butt swaying, and just general drama was more than I would ever intentionally sign up for again.

I have a female poodle who I think needs a playmate. I adopted her at 9 months and she just turned 2 in February. She is very rambunctious and likes to play with other dogs so I am considering getting a second dog.

I held off at first so that I could train her before adding another dog to the fold. Now it appears when my parents visit and bring their dog that she is possessive of her toys and please don't let their pup go near her food. Have I waited to long?

Should I maybe consider a cat? I have never owned a cat, but while she barks at them while we are walking, she seems very calm and interested if we are at the pet store.

Does anyone have advice about adding a new pet to the home?

is the current dog you have spayed or neutered?

You can still add another dog into the mix but consider your current dog as the alpha. Would recommend a puppy at this time

but

are you ready for 2 feeding bowls, 2 leashes, double vet/grooming/flea&tick/heartworm meds bills?

We are down to one dog now and although he is lonely the parents in this house are not ready for a second pet.

may I suggest a fish instead?

I think the cat would just be annoyed. but then i've never had a dog/cat combo (well..yes in jamaica- but the dogs weren't interested in having the cats as playmates..more like dinner ).

Don't think I didn't consider fish too lol, but I can see her barking at them for months until she got used to them. She is spayed; I never want pups again. I don't even know where to begin even down to having to go pull them out my dad's shoe closet as she hid them all about the place.


I can financially able to take care of the two, but I guess I was expecting my dog and my parents' dog to get along better. I think the alpha dog thing might have been an issue too as we probably both expected our dogs to be in charge.

Oh lord at dinner. The cat thing is probably a bad idea. I have never had a cat, but my grandmother had dogs and cats together. They seemed to get along fine, but none of them stayed in the house.

get a younger male, when I got Tango my brothers female dog fell inlove with him, used to pick him up by the scruff an carry him around

Though there may be an adjustment period it is usually fairly short. Dogs are pack animals and do love to have the company, then they are not alone when you go to work and such. It may be a week or so before the new dog is accepted by the original one but in just about 100% of the time they will get along. Keep in mind there is personality traits that come into play, such as I have had pairs of dogs that seemingly hated each other for no apparent reason.

If you get a second dog, introduce it carefully to the original one, and make sure not to give it MORE attention and make your first dog jealous.

Cats are a good alternative to a next dog, cats and dogs do generally get along just fine. Again, it's a personality thing and the cat has to be of a certain mindset. for 14 years I was sure my cat Tango thought he was a dog. Then I got him a kitten and he was upset with me for about a month! They are friends now and this kitten is now starting to warm up to the dogs. Tango is now acting more like a cat. lol.

I might not be getting across seriously bad my male/female experience was. I'm willing to give it some thought though.

BTW, my parents dog is a younger male. He's going on 8 months. They play well together often, but Butterfly is definitely rougher than Java. I think it may be because she is used to being around other dogs and he is not.

You do make a good point about them being pack animals. My parent's dog has not really stayed long enough at one time for them to work out their roles. Plus there is entirely too much human intervention.

I think it's probably a good idea. I will have to give the possibility of getting a male some serious, serious contemplation.
