For dogs that don't like getting wet, what to do?

So I have a poodle, and I thought they were supposed to be water-loving dogs. Aside from taking a bath, my dog has no tolerance for lakes, pools, or rain.

Loving water was not on my list of things I wanted in a dog, but it was something I expected of her. I used to have trouble keeping my Pekapoo out of the Chattahoochee River when we visited the park. I thought it was the poodle in Krystal that gave her that inclination, but Butterfly won’t even step out on the Chattahoochee unless she can see the next rock to put her paw on to keep it dry.

My issue is that when it is raining outside like it was HARD most of yesterday, she does not want to go out and do biz. It’s been a constant drag down the steps battle from day one . I mean really, I don’t want to do that walk in the rain in the first place myself so it’s irritating.

Anyone have suggestions about how to make this not be such a battle? I try not to act aggravated but I know that she knows I am which I’m sure only compounds the problem.

None of my dogs like to go out in the rain either. Of course, I throw them out for potty anyway, but let them back in fast!

Oh Lord I had the same problem with Lil Alex LOL. My hubby put up a blue tarp and some out door carpet under it and he goes out just fine in the rain now.When the weather is nice again we just take it down...

When we are watering or the hose is on, Clancy dedeh a enjoy imself

When it is raining, he hangs out inside but has no problem going outside to do his business

Clancy has no issues with pools , beaches and such loves the water

@ Keesha, the tarp sounds like a good thing but I have a deck off my back door and you have to go down some steps to get to the yard. Where the pic of Alex I asked you for in another thread?

@ Kia, so what you saying I need to do? Splash her down with kitchen sink sprayer every now and then?

One of my dogs won't even get up in the morning if he smells or hears the rain

The other little Missy has to be walked down the deck steps with me under the umbrella to do her business. Either that or she sits on the deck (we have one of those awnings) til you go out with her.......

I moved relatively recently and before that we did not have a yard. So that meant rain, shine, snow, or sleet, I'd have to take her out to go potty. Now that we have a yard, I walk her daily just to burn off energy and look and do whatever dogs do, but does biz in the yard.

When it rains, she will not go out. If I push her out and close the door, she just stands there in the rain lookig at the door. SMH. So I have to take her out for a walk in the rain to relieve herself and she mainly just does no. 1.

I wish I had trained her to use a pee pad or a litter box. I guess that is my new question. How can I train my dog to use a litter box? She's two years old.

so if she'll go for a walk in the rain to do her business, it doesn't make sense to me that the rain is stopping her from doing her business in the yard then again, you did say she uses the yard (on days with no precipitation)

sounds to me like your dog is &quot;smarter&quot; than all of us! maybe she just wants you along for the ride

So you think she saying if I'm going to get wet then you need to be miserable too?

I had to drag her out in the rain before the yard too though when every relief session, rain or shine, had me walking with a baggy.

I am going to make a confession though. I never pick up poop in the rain. Look she little so just consider it fertilizer for your grass.

The only thing I can think of to add is work on seeing how fast you can get him to go potty. I had to do that with my poodle as she is in show coat and that hair cannot get wet!

Her breeder has covered runs. Yep she built a roof over her dog area! I always thought it was nice but I never appreciated the necessity until I started dealing with show hair! It takes 6 hours to dry and band her now.

Anyway, it does sound like she wants you out with her, lol!
