Babies touch everything around them and put their hands in their mouths all the time.
Even if the dog licked the baby's foot, babies put their feet in their mouths too.

Again I ask has anyone ever heard of a child getting sick from a dog transmitted disease? Not me.

I'll check it out on the web and get back to all if I find anything.

Okay,
I did about a five minute search.
All that appears to be a problem is worms that infect mostly puppies.
Any dog that has had its shots will not have them.

So PET dogs would seem to be no problem but yaad dogs not usually so well cared for would be more likely to be a problem for transmission of worms.

The worms are also in the feces so any baby crawling around in an area where dogs have relieved themselves are susceptible.

The incidences of this sort of worm infection seem very very low but if allowed to go untreated can have serious effects.

So... risks from dog licks seem very low.

I have to giggle a little JC. Anyway, any dog can have worms at any age. But the other thing I don't love about the video is that no little baby should be in a position where the dogs mouth is so close. I mean say the baby has food on it's face at one point so the dog might wash it's face instead of the mother, and what happens if the teeth accidentally (or on purpose) gash the baby's face?

Of course, the dog would end up having to be put down.

Also later when baby starts crawling and trying to learn to walk, a whole lot of things could end up happening. By then he has learned no respect for the lack of a better word...and baby could end up grabbing doggie gums or any other part, latching on for dear life and the dog could bite. That is more worrisome to me than the kissing.

funny u mention that nan. in the &quot;babies&quot; documentary i watched couple weeks back, the african baby was shoving her hand repeatedly in the pet dog's mouth, and surprisingly, the animal allowed her and did not bite. i remember that the french filmakers made the point that in many western countries we tend to over-fear for our children, often when there's no need.

i doubt that dog in this thread's video would bite the child. dunno, i just trust that it would not.

that said, its a little disgusting to see the child bawling fi a taste a di dawg tongue

Yeah, it was disgusting. However, what makes it funny is that I feel that baby 100%. I'd be bawling too if I was stuck there with a dog licking me in the mouth.

The French kissing is a little bit much. That dog does not seem as like he or she would bite. But, kids (especially likkle ones) should not be unsupervised with pets for everyones safety.

I agree MGee, this dog in the video would probably never bite the baby no matter what the baby does to it now or in the future. But one does not have to make a child 'afraid' to be a supervisor and it is never too early to start teaching.

Now, in the case of this particular child...I see a train wreck, pure and simple. I see a child that is being taught that dogs are safe, when in fact...he will some day meet a dog that is NOT safe. You hear stories all the time of children sticking their hands in fences trying to pet dogs, the dog bites said hand and then the dog ends up seized by animal control and put down. This is also the kind of thing I can see leading to the child being one of those that feel safe walking up to ANY dog, no matter where the dog is, no matter what KIND of dog it is, and doing something that ends up in the child being bitten. As far as I see it, this is the kind of thing that leads to that very circumstance, and it is ALWAYS the dogs fault. The dog is the one who ends up getting the short end of the stick.

In my opinion the person in charge in this video whether they are the parent or a babysitter, whoever it is...is negligent.

Very true Nanook. When I had the Am Bdog and dobie I used to stop kids from running up on them all the time. I used to tell them if you want to pat the dogs wait till I have them sit, and please do't come up behind them. She (the Am Bull) was crazy about kids. Him (dobie) not so much. Most often I would tell them to pat her and I would pat him and every one was happy.

I guess I have time before I start my mad running around for a story...

Decades ago, when I was very young, there was a family on the corner next to my school that had gotten a new puppy. A mid size beagle mix. I stopped by on my way home every day to play with that puppy and was so in love with it that my parents went and bought me the sister. For months on end I brought the sister on walks to visit the brother. I was probably only 9 or 10 at the time but I have always been dog crazy. I loved my Tammy more than anything so you can imagine how devastated I was when the vet practiced shoddy vaccinating and my Tammy died as a result.

I consoled myself by spending afternoons after school playing with the brother. Well, something happened to the brother one day and he was injured. He recovered but he was never the same. However, I was not afraid of him.

One day, when I was walking home from church...the dog was on the front lawn and to this day I do not think he knew it was me, but I was just walking across the street and the dog was in the yard on the corner there, spotted me and viciously attacked me like he had never seen me before.

A beagle.

It did not make me afraid of dogs. At the time I was only sad that I couldn't play with that dog ever again because it got put down for biting me. I was actually attacked by a stray dog on the street a few years before that and bitten in the butt and thigh, but that didn't stop me from loving dogs.

ANyway, my next dog after that... Her name was Cindy and she was a Doxie/terrier cross. That dog was so smart I taught her to spell. When I got married and left home and had a baby I left the dog with my mother for the safety of my child. Never, though I could trust Cindy with my life...would I have had my baby sitting on the floor and the sort of thing go on. Not ever. Because A) it is disgusting, I KNOW Cindy licked her [censored] I watched her for 14 years...and B) you NEVER know what an animal will do, especially the ones you met on the street and C) This sort of thing is the reason why I never once sold a puppy to ANYONE who had an infant in the house. Small children yes, but only after thorough interviews with the parents on being responsible with the puppy around the child.

I have spent time with their two year olds teaching them proper puppy handling. This includes one of the most important lessons of all...do NOT hold the puppy if it does not want to be held. Puppy must come to YOU, not vice versa. You must sit in one place and call the puppy and wait for it to come to you, and ONLY THEN...can you hold the puppy and ONLY if it WANTS to let you. If it squirms to get away, you let go.

The child in this video is not learning those things. And I guess that is why my disgust with the whole scenario.

Obviously, I see things a bit differently than a novice, but I have been in dogs a long long time and have seen a lot. More than I care to talk about as I also worked in animal control in this area and down by Mpls for a time as well. And that is why my soapbox.

Haki, my distaste for the video was not directed at you at all, it was about the whole scenario and the big picture, which us doggie professionals tend to see more than the average person. Lord knows I almost had fits in the training room when I went to watch beginners obedience a few months ago. Just watching some of the behaviors and hearing the remarks made by the newbies was shocking, as I don't get around that crowd a lot.


I lef you with a pic of me and my next dog Cindy, the one that got me hooked on black and tan, eventually led to my obsession with Dobermans and Min Pins and though I loved her dearly, I did not love her more than I loved my newborn son.

What I meant by &quot;Love has its risks&quot; is that the dog loves the child or at least is treating it as its own offspring by tending to it when it bawls.

The risks seem to be very small as far as disease transmission is concerned so far as I can tell by the web search I did. The dog is obviously not a very young dog, has been around the baby for as long as the baby has been alive and the parents trust the dog with the baby based on all they know of their pet. In this case the person filming was right there and certainly knows the dog's temperament.
Of course you couldn't trust a puppy or a dog that is in any way aggressive or trained to be aggressive alone with a baby or any dog you don't know for that matter..
A look in that dogs eyes and the way it looks and acts toward the baby tells me it is a nurturing and not an aggressive dog and judging by its actions would not go after the baby in any harmful way.
It would tend to treat and protect the baby as it would its own young.

Still, it's not my baby and not my dog. I'm not the one to decide.
