we struggle with this question daily. my moxie doesn't wimper or moan, and is on painkillers twice a day....along with thyroid meds, cranberry capsules and yogurt.
if i really thought she was suffering in pain...i think i'd have her put down. it's hard to know when enough is enough tho...wish she could talk.
It is the absolute hardest decision to make. When pain is involved and if the pain cannot be relieved then it is time. But you will know because she will start to not have ANY fun in her life. My vet says "when it no longer makes you smile to watch them, it is time"
There are some wonderful pain meds on the market for dogs now and they are not necessarily expensive. They usually do have possible side effects and may even cause death, like the day my only 12/13 year old Pogo up and died out of nowhere...it had to be the Rimadyl (actually it was a more modern version of the same drug but the name escapes me), but that drug gave me 4 more months than I would have had without it. Mostly, my dogs live to 16 & 17 so it was a shock though. Some of the meds I used for several years as needed on some of my old timers with no problems.
