Is he the one?

Boomer, the lab-collie mix, is 72 lbs and is a friendly, gentle giant. But he misses Mr. PZ who worked from home and kept him company

I accidentally dropped by the animal rescue league yesterday to have a look for companion dogs. There were many. But then I met Barnaby , a red min pin. He looks like this but without altered ears

He is 5 years old, energetic, very friendly and was a recent arrival. I walked him, played with him, sat down on a bench, and invited him next to me. He was very, very good. I applied for an adoption and brought in Boomer to meet Barnaby. Well, they both got along very well and neither growled at each other. When Boomer wanted to play, this little dog (1/6 Boomer's weight ) stood his own.

Tomorrow I will be interviewed and hopefully will get to take Barnaby to his new home .

I so often think about getting a second one ... my Poor Old Pal ... quit the Sr. Citizen!! he moves a bit slow ... and always stops to check anyone coming along because he just knows they will want to admire him ~

one of the guys gave him a nice little belly scratch the other night ... and his back leg did "thump thump thump" ~

what do you know about the history of the mini pin? Why was he placed for adoption?

He may be nice at first and then you find him humping you or eating your favorite Jimmy Choos

Other than that, he is a sweet looking dog, looks like a low shedder and will keep you &amp; Boomer on your toes

He is beautiful. I got my first MinPin around 1983 and have been hooked ever since. I was a breeder of AKC Miniature Pinscher show dog Champions of record for a time but my first two were rescues.

Each came with their own set of problems, however...they were not problems that made either one of them hard to be around. The first one was not socialized at all. The remedy for him was just to keep him crated in a quiet room when strangers came over, and he was fine.

The second had origins in a puppy mill, and had small amount of insecurity issues, solved easily by countless hours in my lap.

Min Pins are known as &quot;The KING of Toy's&quot;. The name came for a reason. They are a large dog in a very small package! The do well with other dogs as a whole, but care must be taken if they become too aggressive towards some larger dogs. They will not be afraid to start an argument with an aggressive big dog.

That said, you will not find a more loyal to you little companion and it does make sense if you are going to take a second dog, to have the second dog be small. It's just easier!

As a whole they do not have much going on as far as genetic health problems. If he had problem patellas it would be apparent by now. The breed can have eye problems as well, but by 5 years old if his eyes are clear, he should be OK.

I wonder why at 5 he is being placed. That would be a good question to ask. To be honest, if males are left un-neutered into adulthood, they will more than likely &quot;mark&quot;. That is a very difficult bad habit to break, but it is not specific to the Pins, you can pretty much count on that problem with any of the toy breed males left intact. There are ways to deal with the problem though. One would be to get belly bands for him to wear.



Several choices here!

Heck, I could even make you some. I use them...the belly bands can be lined with panty liners to keep them fresh longer, but they also aid in training. When the male lifts his leg on something to mark it, instead of hitting the spot, the urine will then go on themselves, thus making the act unpleasant.

MinPins are very comical and very fun little dogs. They are animated and a pure joy to watch. They are very smart as a rule and need very little grooming. Only occasional bathing and like all small breeds, they do not wear their nails down since they are so light on their feet, so need more often nail trimming than a larger breed dog. I trim my dogs little feet with people nail trimmers.

Barnaby is neutered. He is very muscular and seems healthy and was clearly well-taken care of. During the interview tomorrow I'll ask what brought him to the pound.

Barnaby is quite a little personality. He obeyed when I told him 'sit.' Once outside in the fenced area at the pound, he was very curious about everything! He did not mark anything. When I sat on a bench and patted the seat he jumped right up and sat next to me and was very calm. I handled his paws, picked him up, clapped suddenly around him, pulled on his snout, roughed his head a little - all of which he handled very calmly.

He is very cute. And seems very smart

That sounds very encouraging and hopeful that he is a great choice!
So many circumstances can lead them to shelters. owners pass away, families are losing homes and are forced to give up pets for any number of reasons. It sounds to me like this guy has had a good home in the past. if he hadn't, he'd be a mess and you would have seen that....my first one was a mess!

Another family had put in an adoption app the day before I did and shelter staff forgot to put note on Barnaby's door. I knew Barnaby was not going to stay long in there - he is a great find!
I'm happy for Barnaby . Boomer is still sad

my humane society would have started a bidding war over barnaby

when i was looking for a small dog i used to go the shelter once a week - every one knew my name

they got a bundle of little dogs and they called me and i dashed right over to get one

you'll find the perfect dog - keep trying!
