From Sheepdogs to Schnauzers, Poodles to Pomeranians, Cesar Millan will have audiences spellbound, as he shares his amazing insights on dog psychology, and how people can inadvertently play a role in their dog's “behavioral issues".

Using his natural gifts as an educator and entertainer, Cesar uses state-of-the-art multimedia, accompanied by several demonstrations with dogs and their owners to illustrate his unique concepts. The first half of the show is set in Cesar’s home, where he teaches the audience about how the everyday things we do in our homes, can grow into behavioral issues. As well as tips and tools for a calm and balanced dog. The second part of the show is set in the dog park, where Cesar demonstrates the importance of energy and leadership, and how this can transform your dog. Cesar will have audiences seeing the world through their dog’s eyes and his "fulfillment formula" will change their relationships with their dogs forever.

Chris Bentley, seemingly channelling Millan’s philosophy, stayed calm and assertive Wednesday as he refused to issue Millan an exemption from the province’s 2005 ban on pit bulls.


Millan’s pet dog Junior, a pit bull, is his chief exemplar of good canine behaviour.

“We have a piece of legislation and it applies to all,” Bentley said, just hours before Millan prepared to take the stage at Scotiabank Place. “We don’t amend it on the fly. We respect the law and we expect the law applies equally to all.”


A spokeswoman for Millan said the celebrity dog trainer has known since at least August that the door would be closed on Junior. However, Christine Liber refused to say whether Junior simply sat out the Ontario dates of Millan’s Canadian tour, or whether he was left at home for the duration.


The speaking tour, which features a combination of training tips and live instruction, runs from Oct. 26 to Nov. 14. It includes stops in Victoria, Vancouver, Hamilton, Toronto, London, Ottawa, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Saskatoon and Winnipeg.


Through Liber, Millan refused an interview request and declined to issue a statement.

Nevertheless, Millan has already spoken extensively against breed-specific bans like the one in place in Ontario.

Millan believes breed-specific legislation is discriminatory and misplaced, as do many opponents of the bans. He says aggressive dogs are the result of bad owners.


“You don’t solve the problem by banning something,” he said in a story recently published in the Citizen. “The problem transfers to another breed. In the ’70s it was the Doberman in America, in the ’90s it was the Rottweiler. In 2000, it’s the pit bull. Banning things creates an ignorant, fearful society.”


Bentley, however, stood by the province’s ban, saying pit bull attacks “happened far too many times.”

“We had to take action — and we did.”

The 2005 pit bull ban allows exemptions for dog shows and flyball tournaments. Despite an apparent request from Millan, the ministry did not grant Junior an exemption.


New Democrat MPP Cheri DiNovo said the attorney general’s response was “ridiculous.”

“It’s significant that Cesar Millan, the foremost dog trainer in the world, has had two generations of pit bulls that he’s used as his example of well-trained, happy, responsive dogs.”


DiNovo, whose has tried — and failed — to overturn the ban through a private member’s bill, says the definition of a “pit bull” in the legislation is too vague.


“It talks about wide shoulders, short hair, pointy ears,” she said. “It would describe most of the men at Queen’s Park. Except for the long thin tail — and we don’t know that because they wear trousers.”


“When you start labelling dogs by the way they look, what you’ve got is a grudge bill.”

DiNovo and other opponents of the legislation were stymied by a July 2009 Supreme Court decision not to hear a constitutional challenge of the law.


Millan’s training techniques are underpinned by the principle that the dog owner is the dominant partner, or the pack leader, in the relationship.


He has worked with a wide array of celebrities, including Will Smith, Oprah Winfrey, Scarlett Johansson and Nicholas Cage. His weekly show on the National Geographic Channel is seen in more than 100 different countries.


He has co-authored six books and has been spoofed by such pop culture heavyweights as South Park and Saturday Night Live.


Bentley acknowledged that by facing off against such a popular pit bull champion, he could face the wrath of legions of dog owners.


“I’m a dog lover,” he said Wednesday, mentioning his 15-year-old springer spaniel, Clover.

“She deserves the same type of protection all of our pets would have,” he said. “Unfortunately, what we saw is people’s pets, their children and themselves were subject to too many attacks by pit bulls. So we took this unusual, but important, step for protection. It has its difficult circumstances, I appreciate that. But it was the right thing to do.”
