Disposable dogs

A friend up the street was looking for a small dog for her son (back in October)

I saw an 8 month old Beagle that loves kids free to a good home in work. I told her about him. Her and the owner talked. She took the dog. Now I'm sorry I got involved because she really does not have time for him and has not taught him any manners (the 1st owner did not either)

She called me a while ago and asked me if I know Lhapso Apsas (? spelling) Some one wants to give her a Lhapso mix pup. She said " but Idon't know what I'd do with Benjy". She was talking crap about he wakes her up at 5:30 every morning. I tell her a younger pup will be more work.She said her sister said she should get her son a small dog. She said he's too big , no one will take him if she goes away. I said I will take him if she goes away.

So I tell her I think it is horrible that she would just kick Benjy to the curb. She got very defensive and said she never said she was going to kick him to curb.I told her she can't manage one never mind 2. The call did not end to well.

I hope that she does not just dump him in a shelter. I would never forgive her.

I talked to Mr. JD. I said if she is getting rid of him I will take him and work on his manners and try to find him a home. He did not say anything (but he never said no) The thing is if take him she BETTER take him when I go to Jamaica (can not afford to kennel 2 right now) or we will have nothing more to say to one another.

I hope she lets me know if she is going to get rid of him. She has no business getting a dog!

I remember that thread jamainca_dreamin. I even believe you posted a picture of Benji. If memory serves, she was not used to having a house dog, and maybe she needs to stick with a yard dog if any dog at all.

Lhasa apsos are good dogs. They are extremely loyal, but can be on the stubborn side. I doubt she can handle that one either.

I so understand your frustration with her right now.

Yes, Tulip. I did post a photo of Benjy. He is beautiful and sweet but needs home training.
I am so upset with her right now !

I'm sorry JD, it is a hard lesson to learn. Some people suck.

The majority of people have lackadaisical standards when it comes to pets/priorities. A NEXT dog moving into this situation? Bad Plan (you know that already though)

There is no amount of counseling etc, you are going to do that will change her mind. Most likely you are wasting your precious breath, while aggravating your own space. Serious thing, nobody enjoys being told they are the bad guy so your opinions will fall on deaf ears and nothing will change.

I would NEVER EVER under any circumstances....let this person take care of the dog while you are away. You have time to prepare for an alternative. Have you considered 'in home&quot; care? Sometimes it is less expensive than the kennel. The problem is finding someone trustworthy, I know...but I wouldn't trust the person in this thread with anything that breathes.

There are genuine caring people you can find for home pet sitting. Insured and bonded, this can become an invaluable resource should you want to get away for a night, or whatever. Serious business, not &quot;the neighbor type thing who may very well snoop through your stuff and all sorts of unsavory things like that. I have a couple of clients and jeeze, I'm here to tell you that most are waaay to busy for that kind of nonsense. You get to do the picking, so be picky!.

Save the dog and find a pet sitter.

my concern with in home care is Barney. He is not good with strangers. I am not sure if he'll let them in. I know they will meet him first. But what if i'm in Jamaica and he decides they can not come in?

If you do find someone you trust, maybe they can come a few times to meet barney and play with him so he can become familiar. If it is a person with &quot;dog sense&quot;. then they should be able to overcome Barney's protectiveness.

I once used to check in on a Standard Poodle that nobody in their right mind would think of walking in that house, but I did all the time and she turned into a ball of much for me!

Once Barney befriends you he is thrilled to see you. I have just never had some one come in when I am not here.
Standard Poodles are no joke!

But, most likely a person with dog sense who he has met before would be ok. Actually I asked a couple of people about this before and have not gotten a name yet. But I need some one to come 3 times per day (do not want Barney crated so log) He has to be crated when alone as he destroys blinds if some one is around the house and may kill the bird. I caught him on the back of the sofa once heading toward Luigi's cage

I have not heard from Benjy's owner. I do not understand her. Last week he was her sons best friend. We have her weed whacker. I will ask Mr. to return it and see what is up.

An alternative would be to have someone just stay at your house while you are gone. It might be less expensive than having someone come three times a day. That way, your house is being watched, your mail is brought in etc...the bird will be entertained..


Is there a college near you with a vet or vet tech program? There might be a good place to start. Or, ask at your vet clinic if they know anyone who would be reliable. Heck, if I was closer I would do it!

A teacher at my school was supposed to get me the name of the guys that her parents have used. Still waiting

I asked a guy at work who is involved in a rescue group. He only knows some one who does Palm Beach County not Broward county. I will check with the vet.

Thanks. Because if any one don't treat my baby boy right there would be trouble

They are in South Broward. I am in the northern most part of Broward. I will have to check with them if they come up this far.I am going to wait till I see if I have one dog or two before I book.

I e-mailed Benjy's owner last night. I have not heard back from her.

The pet sitter link posted only handles southern Broward county and North Dade. But, the woman spent a good 10 - 15 minutes telling me what to ask a prospective sitter / what to expect etc.We even talked about Benjy. If I lived down there I would feel very comfortable dealing with her.She and another woman run the company and they (plus one other person) do the pet sitting.

Benjy's owner just called me. She is keeping him and not getting the puppy. She said she knows she needs to try to teach him some manners.

I told her that if I do not get a summer job she can drop him by to hang out with Barney some days. That way he will get some play time. I will try to help with teaching some basic manners (though I am no professional trainer by any means.)


Hopefully things will be ok.

I'm happy because Benjy is a sweet dog and he really loves the child in his home.

This sounds like the best possible outcome! You get to keep and eye on things and enjoy Benjy, and Benjy gets to enjoy being with you and Barney! Awesome.
