and will kill predators (ie groundhogs, skunks, rabbits) that come into its territory yet come in (by his/her own choosing at night) is a great dog. Such was Kissy and when she was around we had a great garden.

Kissy enjoyed being outside by choice the doggy door for her to go in or out was her choice. She came in when it rained and used to love to sit in the snow.

Nanook and others do you know of any breeds mixed or otherwise that would be great?


Can Clancy be trained to hunt? He is more of a water dog and is more scared of animals than we are

What size are you looking for? I bet Clancy would love having a hunting partner. As hunting dogs, Poodles have a strong prey drive. Maybe Clancy just needs a 'partner in crime'. Did he join in Kissy's efforts or just remain nonchalant? If he didn't pay much attention have you considered a Terrier? They would help keep both your yard, and Clancy, in line.

My Pins have caught rabbits. I would imagine you would like something larger though...

Carin Terrier? Still to small? They are hearty little dogs though and get along well with poodles. I would be wary of a herder as they may want to try 'poodle herding' as a sport. I see that happen in a friends kennel who has Wheatens and Corgi's!

Will have to try to come up with more but look around the Terrier groups, born and bred to hunt yet economical in size.

Clancy is a useless hunter.. He used to try & join Kissy but Kissy was older and did not wanted to be bothered with a pup. Clancy is 6 going on 7 so is still in prime years. Clancy enjoys gardening and weeding.. As we pull the weeds, he enjoys catching what we are throwing out of the garden. A Cairn Terrier would not be too small for us because I think it would be time for a smaller dog as long as the dog can climb up the stairs themselves and an added benefit is no counter surfing

MrKia is not too keen on another dog but maybe we can consider fostering one who can teach Clancy the ways of the yard.

We used to have an airedale terrier.. he came with his own leather coat I tell ya

Carin's are fun! They are sweet yet hunters. Westie's too but I like Carin's more. I know someone who just closed out her kennel to old age/re-locating etc. They do require a bit of grooming but maybe it is something you could even stay on top of. The coat should be stripped rather than clippered. (if you clipper these wire coats, you will end up with unrepairable fluff!). Much less than Poodle grooming, like even a couple times a year.

Some old time breeders don't even believe in the bathing of them, just strip the coat and go. (While I can't appreciate that smelly approach to grooming I can accept it as far as the breed history goes). I babysit a Carin for that last 14 or 15 years an I love him to pieces!

My Pei mix (not sure what the mix is but his color / marking look a Manchester Terrier or Mimi Pin) loves to hang out in the yard (we don't have a doggie door) So he will sit at the sliders till you let him in or out. He will run anything out of his yard. He turns into a camel when it rains (will not go out but NEVER goes in the house. His only vices are cat poop and he does not like strangers.
