Actually, how many of us do the right thing and either belt in our dogs to the seatbelt, or use a car seat for the tiny dogs? How many of you strap the dog crate to the seat with a seatbelt?
It really is a dangerous practice to have loose dogs in the car, and though I have been aware for a long time I still let Paris and Rosebud hang out in the back seat loose. Last Fall, a friends husband had their dog in the back seat of their jeep. A deer jumped in front of them, was unavoidable that they hit the thing, and the dog flew to the front and hit the windshield and broke it. Thank God the dog was OK. Oh was she ever bex, because these are show dogs that mostly ride securely crated in the van all over the US and Canada. It only took one fluke during a short 12 mile drive home in a different vehicle, when it happened. She had the dog at work, transported in a van, and he picked it up from there and was bringing it home.
The more I think about it, the more I realize I should harness and belt in my girls. Tulip, don't let anyone give you flack about it!
Another reason, in the case of a crash, if windows break open a scared dog could escape. Think about how totally freaked out he would be, and the likelihood of anyone getting near to catch him up before he gets hit by a next car. It would be awful to lose a dog this way.
Good catch Tulip! You have me thinking on this again & this time I should do more than think.
