...I think I am... Nanook the Dog Expert where are you?

My faithful and much loved Chow Chow (RIP) Blackdog will always be the dog of my heart but I think I'm ready for another pooch. I just don't know which breed but would rather a dog who can go on daily runs with me... long or short. Must have a strong bark! Easily trained. I didn't trained Black, he and I bonded the first day we met. No hip dysplasia prone breed.

Looking for recommendations but top thing is that dog must have running in its genes and would make a great four-legged friend.

Edited to add that I love Dobermans but not sure they are good runners.

Sandi, after reading your horrible invasion I think this is a wonderful plan!

Tanya had a great link, with loads of information. I am also on this road as my old Rose is slowing way down and I am so used to the security a Doberman affords, I don't know at this point whether I can do without one. I cannot extol the virtues of having one around enough. I have had one by my side since May of 1974 and though they are very friendly to most people, they have a 6th sense when it comes time to be protective. They are wonderful with children.

Dobermans...they can keep a trot pace endlessly, if the dog is <span style="font-weight: bold">sound</span>. Back in the day I used to ride Bucko for miles in the woods with my Kaiser by my side. I am used to leaving the windows all the way down in my car, I can leave keys in the ignition and a 1,000 camera equipment on the seat and ain't NOBODY gonna bother a thing, I know that for sure. A Doberman will NEVER leave the vehicle with the windows open. Not ever. Short hair, shed some, but it is not a lot. Wonderful around children.

I love Boxers, but I am surprised they are on this list. Any push faced breed can be susceptible to breathing problems in heat. Care must be taken they do not overheat, though they are not as bad as the smaller Pugs and the like.

You have had the Chow so you are familiar with the coat maintenance and hair involved with the double coated breeds....


Greyhound or Whippets are great dogs, I am thinking that they are maybe less protective than some other prospects though.

Standard Poodles...Wonderful and protective and if you were to go that route you would never regret it, but the grooming is an expense. (6 to 8 weeks apart but I am a clean dog fanatic and do Paris much more regular so I am learning to do it myself under great tutelage). However, they are great clean house dogs and very happy willing companions and do not shed. I would not get a white one if you were thinking protection though. I have a white one and that is why I am worried about losing Rose. I doubt anyone would take Paris seriously, even though she can and does protect her home and yard.

Oh that brings to mind the subject of sex. Females seems to generally be more protective!


The Staffordshire Terrier or Pitt types are nice dogs too, and protective and yes have boundless energy

I see cattle Dogs on the list, nice dogs, intelligent, shed somewhat though as well as the Aussies and Border Collies, Shepard's and the like. Those breeds, even when they come in to the grooming shop regular, leave behind piles of hair every time...The herders are all very intelligent.

Ok so where to get one? Are you looking for a puppy or an already ready to go dog? A puppy will have to grow to maturity (long runs with young dogs could mean serious damage to bone structure on growing dogs, even up to 1 1/2 years old) and work it's way up to running ready.

Dogs that are neutered to young may never grow into the structure needed to go the distance, yet rescues will neuter young just to make sure they get neutered.

Rose is a rescue, she has been sound. Three of my past Dobes were not, and even though they were well bred there are some problems within the breed that need to be noted and watched out for, which make rescue a possible heartache. Sadly it was the well bred dogs I have gotten have had some problems. Rescues should test for Von Willebrands ...is a big one. I have not had this happen to me, and they can test for it now. The dogs at Mn Doberman Pinscher rescue I see, are tested before they go out so watch for that.

I have had 2 wobblers Dobermans and sadly, both came from reputable breeders. I have not researched whether they have made strides to end this disease in the past 10 years though... I would be wary of a very long necked Doberman. The old style is more sound and build is compact as opposed to the streamlined version of today. A good source may be a serious breeder who is active in breed clubs and above all else, has health tested both parents for everything from good hips to Von Willebrands and such and has documents to prove the parents are sound. I will probably do rescue again for my next one though!


Check Google and type your state followed by Doberman Pinscher rescue and see what is there. I found a wonderful guy on Minnesota's site but I won't do this to Rose as long as she is still here...

Yes, they are wonderful dogs and can go the distance! Protective, their back round is a hunting dog.

At my local trail, most &quot;breeds&quot; I see with the serious runners are lab mixes or german shepherd mixes.

There is always the mix breed possibility for sure. The one thing is you never know what you will get if it is a young mix breed. A dog that looks like a lab could be a couch potato personality. Not likely, but the other breed might have been a Pug or something.

I had 2 wonderful Weimaraner/lab cross dogs that I adored and a few Weimaraners as well. Actually, the running thing was the downfall to one of them. Loved Saul but...I had a HUGE sign on the outside door to the effect that I had an escape artist dog and do NOT open the door. Whoever it might be had to wait for me to get there. Saul ended up getting killed by a car but he frequented many haunts on his escapades. I think his favorite place was a gallery 2 miles away, and up 2 flights of stairs!

That might be a good dog to look into Sandi. Weimaraners can go all day long and then some. They have very short hair, easy keepers and are very beautiful when they move..



Rose at 11 (we think she was 3 when I got her which makes her ancient). Ancient but beautiful still...




Standard Poodle in motion, fresh out of the camera. I am learning to groom her myself, this took 5 1/2 hours today! I think in black they look more serious. Anyway, you can see the motion and how effortless they move.

One more thing to add too...each breed has a rescue group, and most have local chapters. That might be a great way to go. You might find an adult, ready to run/protect that has been foster cared for so the foster family would know the personality and habits of each individual. Breed rescues also have mixed breed dogs that favor a specific breed most present.

the preference is a doberman pinscher but i'll settle for either of the 3. i'm doing more researching. thanks for the info!

Most people who I see running with dogs have a short haired breed. Since you like dobermans, it seems like a perfect choice for you.

After reading your other thread, i wanted to ask if you had a dog but it didn't seem like the right time. From your narrowed down list, I'd go with the border collie but that's just my personal preference. I still think a doberman sounds better for you.

@ Nanook, a standard sized poodle can be very intimidating. They look beautiful but they are large and you can tell they'd tear you apart if you don't come correct. The contrast is confusing which makes it all the more scary lol.

Great to know Tulip! I have a ridiculous hard time picturing anyone taking Paris serious. But, she does put on a show and time will tell what she will do when she is the only large dog here when the sad day comes I lose Rose. She very well may step up to the task. Her breeder thinks she will.

I LOVE Dobies My Dino was a love bug. But no one wanted to try him because of his appearance. . I have heard that Border Collies are VERY smart. I know nothing about Australian Cattle dogs other than working breeds need to have a job to do.
