No dogs from the US

I wonder if Jamaica will ever ease up on no dogs being allowed in from the US?

I actually came across a job prospect that would interest me. But, I would not just get rid of Barney. He is a family member.

I know there are strays in some areas that need homes. I would happily take in one or two if I lived there.

Nope, sadly only dogs from rabies free countries are allowed in.

There is a round about way one could probably do it, but it is very involved and it has been eons since I even looked at the regulations. If I remember correctly, even dogs from the UK need a quarantine and 6 months rings a bell. However, the door was opened about a decade ago when the UK started to allow dogs from the US to enter that country for the purpose of dog shows. Until then, there was a quarantine period in UK from the US. Theoretically then, one could get dogs from US to Jamaica via UK, with a long stay in the UK...

Well... I actually toyed with the idea in theory, just to figure out how far a person would have to go to pull of this feat. Not such a big stretch really, a person can get it all done in less than a year and have interesting stories of their adventures to tell.

Reality of a dogs life in Jamaica came and smacked me in the face though, once I thought about managing their care and living conditions once there. The chances of something dire or worse happening to them once they get there is pretty huge. I have seen waaay to much madness where dogs are concerned. I can't think of a time I saw an old dog in Jamaica. I'm sure a few make it to old age but that is the exception rather than the rule. The revenge poisoning alone, is a deterrent to me.

My grand pa and my Daddy both had dogs that died of old age, talking like 15 - 16 years old

My Aunt had a little fluff ball that she spoon fed that lived to be 17 really mean little rat looking ball of fur.

I know lots of people who pay big money for dogs (guard dogs or lap dogs) and as a result treat them as what they are worth.

That is true for dogs from the UK, not the US.

Sadly, there is truth in what you are saying.

If I ever hit lotto I would REALLY support Montego Bay Animal Haven and Animal House. They do rescue and are trying to educate people so that animals receive better treatment in Jamaica.

I had no idea that you could not bring U.S. dogs into Jamaica.

Wherever I move, Madame Butterfly is coming with me. I'd hate to have to start off breaking the law before I even get my foot in the door good, but I'd have to figure out some way to make it happen.

So..a blind person from the U.S. with a seeing eye dog can't even visit Jamaica much less move with their dog?

Not a chance, nor a prayer. I remember back in the year 2000 when Claudia Kirschhock went missing in Negril. She was the travel writer from Frommers that was never found. Anyway, there was a long road of fight for the family to get the Jamaica Government to approve the search and rescue dog from the US to come to help find her. The approval finally went through for something like 48 hours or some limited time and it was the only case I have heard of, of a US dog allowed in.

I have heard rumblings of dogs smuggled in by boat, but imagine getting caught. That would be a big enough deterrent for me! Would you ever see the dog again? What shape would it be in by the time you arrived?

I think in order to even open the door to the possibility of getting in through the UK, a live rabies vaccine could never have been administered, or at the very least, a titer test would have to prove no trace of the vaccine in the dogs system. Not 100% sure on that, but I believe it is because here, mostly live vaccine is used...and I believe it is also the reason for the ban on dogs from the US.

It was nice to hear of the aged dogs you all posted above! The majority are not so fortunate and it says a lot of good things about the owners of those dogs.

So Nanook, I guess that means I can't pass off a miniature poodle as a seeing eye dog eh?

I think it should be easy enough to test the dog for rabies upon arrival. Make the owner pay for it so expense is not the issue. Well, that's just my opinion anyway and I know a lot of people don't look at pets as part of the family.

I thought that testing for Rabies was not so easy. Years ago I took in a pregnant stray cat. I asked about testing for Rabies and was told they'd have have to &quot;cut her head off&quot; I nearly dropped. but, that was in the early 90's.

There was talk of international pet passports, but I do not know if Jamaica was on board.

There SHOULD be some way for responsible pet owners to do it. Even if the Jamaican government charged a fee that MOST of which goes to caring for animals already in Jamaica. I'm sure there are many returning residents and expats who would be willing to pay it. If i had the $$ I sure would.
