I grew up with dogs at home, but my grandmother had dogs and cats. My cat at my grandmother's house was Bobby. He was a white cat with brown ears and a brown bobbed tail.
I tried to hug him up one day when he wouldn't come after I had been calling him, and he scratched the [censored] out of me. What kinda what!
I haven't been too cool with cats since then.
I briefly considered it for a moment in recent years, but I don't think I'll ever get one of my own as a pet.

Tulip,
You make the mistake that every dog owner makes when they later get a cat.
They try to treat it like it's a dog and a cat has a very different nature from a dog.
For instance: If there is a group of people in a room and a cat walks in the cat will almost always go to the person who does not like cats and here is why:
It is a threatening action to a cat to get in its face and call it and STARE at it; look into its eyes. That is an invitation to a fight that a cat must overcome every time a FRIENDLY human does it to them.
The person who hates cats will, of course, not look at the cat at all or not for long which in cat body language is a very friendly and polite thing that ALL cats do when they meet one another: NOT STARE, not make moves in the direction of the cat all the while making noises and staring. THAT'S asking for a fight.
A dog in the same situation: a room full of HUMANS ?
Heaven.
.
Long before the cat that you picked up AGAINST ITS WILL, scratched you, it gave you several subtle warning signs that would have told a cat person: " DON'T PICK UP THAT CAT!"
You did not see the signs that the cat /any cat always gives because they are subtle and you didn't know to look for them .
You are definitely a person who should not have a cat.
There is a very apt saying that: "Dogs have masters, cats have slaves."
To not understand this is to ensure a very bad cat/owner relationship.
Seriously
My wife created our website at catscratchbox.com and it contains a lot of very good information on cat behaviour and some interesting facts about cats that would help you or any potential cat owner.
