ST. JOHN’S—The Canadian Medical Association wants commercial airlines to forbid passengers from bringing pets into airplane cabins in order to protect other travellers who suffer from allergies.
“While airlines argue that this is a great thing for pet owners, the practice actually exposes our patients and their passengers to significant allergens that could make the journey difficult and occasionally (make them) quite seriously ill as a result,” said Dr. Mark Shonfeld as he presented the motion at the annual general council of the CMA in St. John’s, Nfld. on Tuesday.
The motion carried, which means the professional organization representing about 75,000 doctors nationwide is now urging airlines to ban all pets—except for guide dogs and other service animals – from passenger cabins.
They said there would be no problem with transporting pets in a pressurized cargo hold.
Air Canada began allowing small pets such as cats, dogs and birds to travel with their owners in the airplane cabin in July 2009, while its competitor WestJet reportedly has pets on about one quarter of its flights.
