Bedroom for a Princess

So I decided to decorate my daughter’s bedroom…It was never done when she was born..because she never slept in her room, hence my reference to chapter 15 in the parenting forum. It was either now or never, it was slow season at work…soon to become busy season so I had better get on it..plus I just moved into a new place, so I had really get on with it.

If you have ever had the pleasure or misfortune of meeting me… [img]/forums/images/graemlins/704555_dwl.gif[/img] you’ll know that I have champagne tastes on a sparkling cider budget and I would rather do without than to purchase a key/quality piece of whatever it was that I was considering purchasing …so this was going to be interesting to say the least. First decision- should I get a designer or should I do it myself ? I chose to do it myself and will reveal why in the next couple of months.

So now what ? Where do I begin ? Luckily I had been searching online for the perfect pieces for the past 2 years…so I already had favorite sites/sources for the look I wanted to achieve. If I had just started searching for inspiration/ideas/sources today, the whole project would have been a disaster.

I soon found out this was going to be a one woman project and that Mr. Geneva would NOT be assisting in any way shape or form. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img] Perhaps Mr. Geneva should be the ex Mr. Geneva ? [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70400-talktohand.gif[/img]

She is 5 and a very girly girl...loves everything Princess...however I refuse to do any Disney sinting inna the room....she asked me to draw an Ariel mural on the wall... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70394-bawlout.gif[/img]

the room is pink with the wall behind the bed sponged with purple..then we had her do her handprints in purple on one area...she has a princess bed( mainly white) with a canopy and

Another reason why her room wasn’t decorated was that I was a SAHM for 3 years (man..that’s another story for the Parenting forum) and money was tight. I have been back to work for a full year now and so there’s some money to drop on her room. Well me being the thrifty person that I am decided that if I was going to drop couple grand (okay way more than couple) then I may as well get some kind of points or whatever going on my credit card since it is my main format of payment for any and all purchases, and it’s high time I enroll in one. Sigh..

The bedroom presents quite a challenge. It is long and narrow, with a hideous radiator and one of those old heating pipes that go from floor to ceiling. I had better figure out how to make this room work. It had better be styling as well as functional since it was quite possible the end result could be a part of a portfolio [img]/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img]

Choosing the Paint

Well…this really wasn’t a challenge as I already knew that I was going to use pink with accents of green and perhaps red. I wanted small tester pots…but the smallest size I could get was the quart. Well it’s true that you won’t know what it really looks like until you put it on the wall and view it at different periods during the day. Anway Mr. Geneva purchased some painting supplies and I picked some up at the Depot.

Speaking of the depot I have been in now almost everynite this past week…I think I should apply for a job there. Okay…so on to the painting. I decided that I was going to use regular masking tape (as opposed to the painter’s blue tape) to tape off the wall. This is sooooooooo boring but necessary. But wait…I am only 5 and change…how am I going to tape the ceiling line…\0/ whatever…I will deal with that later…..So taping is complete and ready to paint….oh wait…must apply the ready made drop cloth first. So I started to paint and stepped back to admire my work. This was my second time painting, the first doing volunteer work at a school, and the wall looked weird. I didn’t use primer because the walls were already white. I could see some white peeping thru the pink. Was this supposed to happen ? I had already decided that I was going to use 2 coats, but still, I didn’t expect the white to be peeping thru the pink.

Anyway, I continued and concluded that it would look better when dry. I asked a friend of mine if this was normal and he said yes….DWL. I got the radiator and decided that I was going to need some smaller rollers to get behind the radiator. So I painted and painted and talked to myself...I was alone so it was okay to talk to myself..mostly cussing Mr. Geneva for not helping. At one point I got so carried away with cussing and painting that I forgot that there was paint on the top half of the wall…so I leaned in and my head touched the wall…. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]”OH NO” to put it nicely…this means paint was in my hair…I ran to the bathroom and there was pink paint in my hair…thankfully it was just a little so I was able to get it out. Anyway, I have one more wall to paint and Mr. Geneva has informed that he will help to do the top of the walls [img]/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif[/img]

So the color I decided on is Hot Pink by Glidden...I first tried the Valentine Pink on the wall but it was a bit too lively...I do want her to be able to sleep in the room too [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

I'll use the original color on a piece of furniture....
