Anyone built a pergola?

We plan to, perhaps starting today, PH is off to the lumber store.

We have a ground-level deck that is in sun until 6Pm, this will give us shade, and also give my HUGE trumpet vine a place to grow.

Any tips out there?

a pergola? i envision that as an arbor...but bigger?

my hubby has built an arbor...nothing fancy about it...and it's looking pretty haggard now.

what i want to see....is your trumpet vine. I've had one for a couple years...it isn't doing much.

Grrr, we keep getting scattered rain showers while trying to stain/protect the wood.

This is the sort of thing he's up to:



...ours will cover our deck, which is about 20 x 15. I have a 5 year old trumpet vine that cannot wiat for something BIG to climb and cover.

Loops, mine took a year or two to get blooming well (buds on it right now actually), but once established, yikes....this thing totally outgrew the cute 6 ft fence I put it next to and now I have to cut it back all the time.

This is for loops, it is the trumpet vine's main, umm, trunk, I guess is the word. Trumpet vines lose leaves in winter but they sprout new ones, and more vines, from that same wood. So they get tree-like if you train them that way. The post is for the new pergola.

loops, here's where the vine is at now:



They will open in a week or two I'd guess. Mine ius yellow/orange which i think is a hybrid, the "wild" ones are, I think dark orange/red.

Your weigela is blooming now, I have the same kind, the variegated one, and mine finished a couple of weeks ago, so you must be a bit cooler where you are?

Sure will [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] I think the pergola will be done in a day or two, then the vine can really romp. Sadly the pergola means the flowers will largely be above our heads, not so easy to see, but bees like them a lot so that's probably just as well.

Ph is a carpenter...he built the deck, the fence, the pergola, the arbor over our hammock...he is handy that way.
