I just got an old dresser and I would like to sand it down and then restain it. I have never done this before and would like some tips. I like the color stain that it is now. Don't laugh at me for asking this question but can I take a drawer into the store so they can tell me what stain to buy? Any help or suggestions for this project will be appreciated.

While you ae there ask them to tell you what chemical stripper to use too, because sanding alone will not do it.

Re: Refinishing a dresser
If it's in fair shape, you can get away with not stripping it.
Get a color that's close as you can find and do some touch up on bigger scratches first. Then sand it with some fine grit paper and stain it all over.
I've done that with some yard sale finds and they look great.

Do you have a picture of it? That would help to know what kind of finish is on the piece now.
I've got an antique oak buffet I'm about to do, just waiting for it to cool off a bit out there!

Re: Refinishing a dresser
How ya doin with your dresser PLV?
I started my oak buffet yesterday!
It's coming along just nice, but what I thought was going to be a simple layer of stain color paint, turned out to be 3 layers of paint and 1 layer of varnish & even contact paper!
I wish I'd known about mixing household bleach with zip strip back in the day when I did quite a lot of this. It's making my job much easier, and with little elbow grease and minimal sanding.
This works like a charm:
After the first two coats of stripper,
mix in 50% regular house hold bleach with your stripper.
Use #2 steel wool to work the stripper in.
Wipe up with denatured alcohol mixed with water 50% each.
Don't use wire brushed!!!!
Use plastic brushes or old tooth brushes.
After everything is stripped and before finishing,
wipe down everything with paint thinner to reveal the true
color of the wood.
If there are areas that need attention they will be noticeable.
Repeat the paint thinner process if necessary.
Lots of great info on this site I found!
