Help! What the heck is THIS?

I have noticed numerous plants in my back yard are not doing so well. Some of them look chewed, and there appears to be mole tunnels throughout the garden. Moles don't come out of the ground and chew plants, so what has been doing the chewing??? We have set mole traps and haven't caught a thing yet... I have been going out of my mind trying to figure out what is causing my plants to die.

Today I am home from work early. I step into the back yard to see how the plants are doing in the days heat. WHAT DO I SEE? nibbling away on my lavender and hydrangea?

The other night I saw something run across the yard and I thought it was my neighbors cat. Then last night I sprayed some sort of poop off of my deck. Yes, maybe it is a groundhog. I have never ever seen one before! Man oh man, plant a garden and look what you get.

ground hog. about 5 yrs ago we had a ground hog, and it only ate the wild clovers. It and the Blackdog got on good...they were like buddies. Then the ground hog multiplied and the young ones started having a feast on my plants. Then, my dog started hating them enough that he killed couple ground hogs. We went on a 'ground hog hunting trip' and caught 'em all, took them into the country and let them loose. No more ground hogs, but my dog is still vigilant towards them.

We are having a heck of a time catching these buggars. We set humane traps and haven't caught a thing yet. Meanwhile my lavendar has been eaten to the ground. Yup, groundhog. My dog was really good at keepinng them away 9and leaving teir babies on my backporch as a gift, yuk) but since he died (RIP) they've come back.

They're essentially the same thing; both are burrowing rodents - but gophers are the ones known for tunneling, and they're little things, sqirrel-size. Groundghogs are plump, &amp; about the size of a cat.
