I just bought a house that was built in 1955. It's charming but Lord I don't want to get that smell on me or my things. Would a dehumidifier in the basement do the trick?

That and a fresh coat of paint in all the rooms.
I don't think it's so much an old house smell as an "Other People's House" smell. -

Before you paint check for mold and just have the dehumidifier run for a while. When you paint use the paint with the mold protection in it.Comment

Skelli, did you move in yet? Will you have the opportunity to disinfect from top to bottom prior to moving in? Is it wall to wall carpeted?Comment

If it carpeted, change the carpet...hey you know what is a good house freshener...put some fabuloso in a pot a water and put it pon the stove..it deodarizes the house nice.Comment

Only the bedrooms are carpeted and they smell fine. Its just in the kitchen, dining area and basement....I have not movedin yet....hope to do a full Lysoling this weekend. And the walls have been primed and painted before we signed so there is no need for me to do that again. I think there must be some moisture in the basement because I notice the dryer lets off alot of steam so I am going to look into that.Comment

Lawks Beans. Mi nuh know wah more fi seh odda dan it jus smell ole. Maybe some airing out is needed because it was locked up for so long. No they had no dogs in the house.Comment

Skell, I like Febreeze better than Lysol. Also, wash every surface you can with clorox cleanup diluted. Kills germs and everything. If you are pregnant, get help. Please. An do get the $40 dehumidifier for the cellar. Please keep us posted.Comment

only way u a go get rid of that smell is to resheet rock the walls..

(own a couple of properties, and I sheetrock one, and the smell gwan..so dats why I know)
U just have fe kep up the airfreshener thingy all the time..
and steam the carpets twice a year..
That I know helps..
