My furnace

Has anyone experienced this? Here’s my situation.

I live where the temperature right now is about 25 degrees.

After my furnace has kicked in, heated up the place and turned off I hear this tap tap tap noise. just loud enough to keep me awake (reminds me of a dripping tap). I have gone to the furnace and listened - doesn't seem to be coming from there . . . Can hear it in the ceiling - don't know what it is - very strange though - starts out fast tap tap tap and then diminishes into every 3 seconds and so on. It is very annoying - keeps me awake AND I don't know what it is- so it is disturbing to me. . ..

Don't know if it's a vent or what? But it's ALWAYS after the furnace has stopped.

Could it be the house shifting from the cold? But I thought that happened in colder weather.

Any ideas. I am trying to avoid getting the “furnace guy” out here!

sounds like your fan - do you have it on or auto?
if it's on auto - it may the sound of the fan slowing down after the furnace is off

also check your filter

i suggest you get one of those winter checks on your furnace - they are usually about $30 or so

better to get it checked out now - than have some BIG repair bill later 'cause you were ignoring the symptoms

I dont know what that could be, but I know that my car does dat and its a 2006..
I think u should call the furnace guy and ask, just to be on the safe side..

Same issue here, I was told that it was the ductwork, which is made of sheet metal, it expands and contracts as result of the heat from the furnace and results in that tap tap noise.

A more pricey ductwork system is the solution.

What kind of furnace do you have? Could there be dust on the fan? Is the filter changed monthly? Do you have oil/hot water heat? When is the last time you saw a "furnace guy"? They do require a little maintenence, particularly the fusable link but that dosen't seem to be your problem, was just using it as an example.

Coco-T - ya, it’s a real bummer - especially because it disturbs my sleep! Last night I got up and turned heat down just so it wouldn't kick in and give me the "taps" all night [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]
