member seh rats love fe walk round the carners of a room /to de wall, so mek sure that if the trap set, a deh soh u put it.
also u need fe check fe see if u have any openings, cus them coming thru somewhere..
and plug steel wool inna it (can buy it from home depot)
crawl pon de floor like baby, and any little hole, no matter how minute, plug it with steel wool

When Mice Move in to Spend the Winter

AROUND this time of year, mice start looking for a place to spend the winter. And one of the places they may be looking at is your house.

“Mice can enter a house in a variety of ways,” said Bob Young, the Northeast division service manager for Terminix, the national pest-control company based in Memphis. “So you want to seal up every opening they can find. Unfortunately, that’s easier said than done.”

Mr. Young said that the common house mouse — Mus domesticus — weighs about an ounce, has a two-inch-long body and can slip through a hole just a little bit bigger than a pencil.
“Every building has a pipe that goes through a wall somewhere,” he said. “And most times, the space around the pipe is big enough for a mouse to get through.”

Such spaces, Mr. Young said, can be easily plugged with steel wool; use wire mesh on bigger holes.

“You also want to look at all your doors and see how they seal,” he said, noting that garage doors in particular provide convenient entry points for mice. “Make sure there is good weatherstripping around all doors, especially on the bottom.”

When mice have already infiltrated a house or apartment, there are two basic options: trapping them or poisoning them.

“I lean toward trapping,” said Ken Martin, the sales manager for DoYourOwnPestControl.com, an Internet retailer of pest-control products. “But trapping is more labor-intensive.”

One of the most effective traps, Mr. Martin said, is the familiar Victor snap trap made out of a piece of flat wood, a tightly wound spring and a triggering platform that holds the bait.

“The problem is, a lot of people are afraid of these traps,” he said. “They’re scared they’re going to whack their fingers.”

For them, Mr. Martin said, there are a number of other traps available that are less intimidating and easier to set.

The keys to using traps effectively lie in the number used, their positioning and the bait.

“If you’re not starting with a dozen traps, you’re not serious about catching mice,” Mr. Martin said.

The traps should be placed wherever there are mouse droppings — often, behind appliances — and along the perimeter where the wall meets the floor.

“You want them perpendicular to the wall, with the baited end closest to the wall,” Mr. Martin said.

As for bait, “cheese only works in cartoons,” he said. He favors a dab of peanut butter, and if the mice are not interested in that, a good alternative is a cotton ball with a few drops of vanilla flavoring.

For those who would rather not have a dozen or more traps baited for the meandering mouse, another option is poison.

“One drawback to poison is that if the mice die inside the house, you could have an odor problem,” Mr. Martin said.

Traditional mouse poisons are blood thinners. “The mice eat the bait and bleed internally,” he said, adding that the idea that a poison will make the mice so thirsty that they will go outside to find water is “an old wives’ tale.”

Another problem with poison is that what’s bad for a mouse is probably going to be bad for a cat, dog or child. So it is important to follow the directions when using poisons.

Michael F. Potter, a professor of urban entomology at the University of Kentucky in Lexington, said many people believe that if they place poisons behind an appliance or in the basement, they are safe. “They may be out of sight, but that doesn’t mean they’re safe from a dog or cat or an inquisitive child,” he said.

If a poison is going to be used indoors, Dr. Potter said, it is best to place it in a special tamper-resistant container, which should then be secured to the surface so that it can’t be moved.

We also have the pest control devices that emit a high frequency sound-- It has driven the mouse out of the master bath and into the kitchen. Am considering buying a few more and put in every room

I'm not really into the trap thing. My mom used it once when I lived in Rat Central aka NYC and lo and behold I went into the kitchen and heard squealing when I looked under the cabinet I saw two stuck to a glue trap, I promptly tek up mi bag call taxi adn went to mommy's house until my father came home from work to remove them.

They were demolishing a house next to where I lived and that caused an infestation, ok so it wasn't really an infestation more like 2 little ones but I called in an exterminator. He came and said for everyone that you see there's probably around 7 that you haven't seen you can imagine my [img]/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif[/img]

Anyway he put down poison all over the house and that dried them out. The problem is that during the process it makes them thirsty and and they will try to find water and head for the doors or windows and usually end up dead there (that prompted another 3 day period of living with mommy [img]/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img]

My last episode happened after the house was damaged due to a fire and hubby used d-con, he didn't even mix it with rice or oats, he just put it down and they were gone.

Luckily I left NY and am now living rat free of course now I have to worry about lizards and snakes \o/

We had to seal our mailslot shut, the health inspector told us to do so, cus that was a possible site fe rats fe come troo and tek up residence..

We had the cubes too.. and the rat traps and the have a heart traps

Anyway the experienced rat trapper came &amp; sprayed nuff powder into the nooks &amp; crannies where Mssr Rodent. The rat will groom himself after he walks on the powder and that will poison his behind..

I have to clean the infested area after 2 weeks and then check it again a week later for droppings to make sure there are none. I have a 60 day guarantee on this stuff.
