I was thinking of doing something like Bathfitter (but they won't come without my husband home so forget them), or something similar, but a friend told me that bathtubs can be painted with some kind of special paint.

Try "Klenks Tub and Tile Epoxy Pack,for porclain and ceramic surfaces". I comes in many colours..
