Bad Contractor... bad work...

I am so frustrated right now. I hired a contractor a few years back to do some work on my house. A new fence and a new roof specifically. He and his company were licenced and bonded.

The first rain after that, my roof began leaking (it never leaked before) and I found out at that time that my roof was not done properly. I contacted the contractor only to find out that he and his wife divorced and he left town.

I had the roof problem fixed.

We had a wind storm a few months ago and my entire back and side fence came down and my roofing material came off. I had contractors come out and do you know that the back part of my fence did not even have cement laid!!!? [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/mad.gif[/img]

At one point I was going to just try and fix it all but now I am thinking I need to get my money back from this crook.

yuh afi call the city and file a complaint, and maybe even escalate it to the state, but since im move yuh probaly have to sue him...hush ((((sistagrl)))

Thank you Kia and TT. I am in the process of gathering all of the money orders I paid to him as well as his contract. I have been searching online to see how this process even works, afraid I may have to hire an attorney, which I really don't want to do. I have to take pictures of the horrific work before it all gets completely fixed and in the meantime gather all of the reciepts for the RE-do's that I have had to do. I am also trying to locate him, thinking if I call him and tell him that I am going to sue that he may want to make things right... maybe I am naive thinking people like this even have a conscience or care. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70392-silly.gif[/img]

Well thanks for letting me vent. If anyone has had experience in sueing a contractor I would love to hear your story. *sigh*

start with a letter to him - certified
even if it's too his old address (may get forwarded)
also send one not certified - folks get scared of certified mail
depending upon the amount - you may be able to go to small claims court (each state has different maximum)i'll check and see what i can find for Washington

you should be able to do it yourself

start watching those court shows

and document, document, document

Seveen, thank you so much for the details, as simple as it seems I am so overwhelmed by this it just seems monumental. I thought I would atleast start by getting all of my receipts from the original work as well as the RE-DO work, so I can begin to write the letter to him detailing the expense. I will take pics of the shoddy work this weekend. I am trying to get my house ready to put on the market and as the newest contractor was looking at the work he needs to do I was just trembling thinking about what else they would uncover... don't do too much work to your house - if the buyers see something wrong - you can fix it then or give them an "allowance" to fix it themselves or negogiate the cost of the house

save your "real money" for things you want to do to your new home [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70371-jump.gif[/img]

All of the work is unfinished projects that the buyer will notice. It really is not alot but we had a windstorm and I lost parts of my roof and when a contractor was looking at it he noticed the work that was done was bad. It is sickening.

Dealing with the bad contractor is something that has to wait a few months but I need to capture the evidence now which is causing my anxiety. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif[/img]

Awww, Sistagirl, I am so sorry for all of your troubles. Some people are just, well, you know. How do they sleep at night?? Any progress?
