John crow blow nose?

Today I was walking around the property and saw this odd thing growing out of the ground under the big ole oak tree. It reminded me of a John Crow Blow Nose...the colour, plus it had a sweetish stinky scent and flies were all over it. I could tell it's a plant of some kind, since it was growing straight out of the earth. Mi couldn't tell when last mi see a Johncrow blow nose but mi always felt that if I saw one, it would be recognisable. Anybody ever see anything like this before?

I could be wrong but I know a bit about mushrooms and that thing you found looks to me like what is called a stinkhorn which is a type of fungus/mushroom.

Several of them, like the one you found, look like penises and as the name implies they smell badly (like feces) which attracts the flies. The flies pick up and spread the stinkhorn spores and that ensures the survival of the species.

Try Googling stinkhorns and see if you don't find your mystery solved.looki

I'll be damn! johnnycakes you are correct. I did a google on stinkhorn...very interesting plant. Check this out, what we call John Crow Blow Nose in Jamaica is a species of stinkhorn, called an octopus stinkorn or deadman's finger and is found in Florida.

i saw a john crow blow nose when i stayed at East of Eden

it was a little flatter to the ground than your "penis" stink mushroom and the blow nose was more "honeycomb" like - like your second picture

it only lasted a day - stank like hell

i think it was the remains of a dead kitten that one of the john crows got - pee yew :stink:
