I just got a package of Thai Winged Bean seeds and am going to grow them this year.
I read about them some time ago and never saw anything else about them since.
About a month ago I was in the supermarket looking at the seeds packages on sale and the woman running the plant department asked if I needed help and I mentioned that I'm always looking for FRILLED beans which is what I though they were called. She said I probably meant WINGED beans which she as an army wife had seen a lot of in the Phillipines.
Sure enough I found a lot about winged beans on the web and got a package from Heirloom Seeds.
It is an amazing plant. You can use the flowers to color food, eat the bean pods which are 6-9 inches long and which have frilled sides. The leaves can be cooked much like callaloo/spinach and the root/tuber can be prepared and eaten like potatoes(Irish).
Try Googling them for a good picture and fuller description.
I 've never seen them in Jamaica but they would seem to be a great food crop.
Anyone had any experience a yard with them?
