Going "green"

me thinking bout it, and me realize that inna way, me already trying to go green, by using compost, and natural fertilizers,(seaweed) instead of chemical ones..
me not however, going to switch me gas mower, snowblower, fe solar powered one.. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70388-shameonyou.gif[/img]

For those of you that have considered going green, what are some of the ways you have started too..

I don't partake in the throwaway society way of thinking. Being conscious of now much waste is generated and doin my part to halt it.

Recycle everything possible of course

Buy local products whenever possible

I recycle water a lot here since all my waste water needs to be pumped out

The energy efficient bulbs plus you will never see a light on in my house n a room that is not occupied

Do all errands at once and not have to make so many trips

properly dispose of things such as electronics and medicines. Do NOT put medicine down the drain

environmentally friendly cleaning supplies, but I do still add a few drops of bleach to my dish water, just a few.

I keep my heavy drapes closed at night to keep the heat in but I open them during the afternoon sun to cash in on that free heat!

That is a few ways off the top of my head

Yes, I too try to be as green as possible.
Many (not all) of the things listed in Nanook’s list apply to me. I learned this “skill” from my parents and teachers in grade school.

As I was just doing dishes I thought of another one. I really wanted to have a tankless hot water system and after saving for one I found out I can't have it in my place because of the crawl space.

Ok, so what I did notice so many times was how long the water runs before hot will come to the faucet. I use that water for filling my dog dishes and the rest I pour into a pot and use it for rinsing dishes or take it a few steps and use it to flush the toilet. I will use the water to flush after rinsing the dishes too. Here it is about half a gallon of water to the kitchen sink before I get hot. That is gallons of water a day. Just running it into the drain for no reason is a terrible waste.

** compost pon a regular
** recycle in accordance with township requirements
** use freecycle to give away items that may have otherwise gone into the trash

** use energy star appliances when we had to upgrade
** we have a state program where we can 'buy' our energy from renewable sources -- the way it works is our base electricity provider is required to buy current from the renewable energy provider we selected. In our case we have wind power.

** walk instead of driving wherever possible.. it is a win/win solution

** don't use bottled water..we fill using the filtered water at home..

recycle recycle recycle....we dont ahve curbside garbage service because we rarely fill one small bag of trash per week...our neighbors (who have less people in the house than we do) fill a full size street side container every week...there are 2 of them. Its full of beer bottles...milk jugs...soda cans...Makes me want to go dig thru their garbage and put the stuff in my recycle bins...

can you share how you do that? We dont have that many bottles but what about papers, wrappers, etc?? what do you do?

btw do you recycle paper towels?

No...not paper towels...dont use a whole lot of them though. WE have bins in the garage...one for glass, one for mixed(cans, plastics etc), one for newspaper, one for corrugated cardboard and one for other misc paper (ie mail, paper, magazines, cereal boxes). Then when they get full we load them in the truck and take them out to the recycle center for free drop off.

WE have a garbage disposal...so most food waste goes down that...but we plan to build a compost this spring...

so between the three of us...we just dont fill but one medium size garbage can a week (the kind that fits under the kitchen sink).

my main company isnt pseg.. I guess there are regional electric companies.
Ours allows us to buy our electricity from other companies.. but you are not really buying directly from the other company as that company is using the same electrical grid as ur main company. so in essence you are directing the main company to buy the same amount of electricity you use from the supplier you have chosen
