what is the name of the material used when making parachutes? I think they use it when making childrens play canopies & tings too ??

Well, lots of parachutes were made of silk....but I think they have switched to a type of nylon. Some children's playthings are made of nylon, too, along with canvas of various weights. Word you looking for in there?

I would like to make a canopy or a roof to the treehouse so that there can be shelter from the 'rain' yet not be permanent so the roof doesnt go flying into our house during the Nor'Easters.

There are tall poles where the 'roof' can be attached to and taken down for the winter.

I was thinking of a lightweight, colorful material for FT Kia

Oh I see! Well, if you are making it yourself, then why not get soem sail canvas. Then after you get it all together, you guys could paint it with some colorful design and really personalize it! What fun. (why don't I have all the smilies?)

I think in a boting shop they would be all made. A big fabric store, or a decorating center that also caters to yacht furnishings, and online, of course. Sicne you only need a smaller piece shouldn't be too bad. You might even try Craig's list or freecycle....maybe someone has a torn one that you can salvage?

One a parachute gets a little hole in it they aren't good for much so it should be easy to find a used one! It reminds me of when we were kids we found one at the local landfill. It was like Christmas! My dad tied the center to a rope and threw it over a tree limb and we had an instant tent and camped in that thing all summer long! They are pretty big though, so what you want it for you'd probably want it smaller. Is there a flying school near you? You could probably call them and ask around about a parachute?

i will check craigslist/freecycle.. I see people selling a lot of their boats on craigslist
