hmmm.... picking lettuce plants

I've been gone for over a week and came home to see my lettuces have grown over 1 ft! How do I pick the leaves? Start from the bottom? It is no longer bunchy, which was how I left it but it is now bunchy *and* tall.

My vegetable garden is looking most scrumptious and I am yet to take pics of the flower garden.

sounds a bit like they bolted (started going to seed). the leaves at the bottom would be the oldest and may not be the best tasting, but then again the ones closes to the top would be smaller as the plant is diverting resources to seed.

picking leaves from the middle may work...

If you want to try to revice it at all, I would be cutting most of it, and carefull choosing, while discarding the rest. Otherwise, tear them out and start over - luckily lettuce is fast fast!
