Too dark a color for room?

Got a great deal on a wall unit type device that I think would be perfect for girlKia's room. It is open type bookcase/basket storage on both sides with a 'bridge' of same. The unit also includes a bench with storage for 3 baskets as well.

This is not the unit but the design is similar to this. The one I have coming is better quality wood and has no drawers nor the 'X' thing

The walls are painted in a blue called 'Determination' from Olympic, the trim & baseboards are white. The comforter is a plaid, pink, blue, yellow.

I am concerned how to 'girlify' the wall unit so it wont look out of place in the space.

Also would it make sense if I added a dark dresser to go with the unit?

I have a similar wall unit in my family room...I think the color is dark for a girls room..what color is her bedroom set? White is perfect for a little girls room.

This will be part of her bedroom set.. I dont like white because it is transitional and I dont want to buy a new set for her.
The idea is that her full bed will be placed under the bridge and then I will add baskets.. maybe covered in a bright colored cloth to brighten it up.


She has a full size platform bed (mrKia built it). The edges are covered with a pinkish/red canvas but the comforter covers this so it is hardly visible.

Her dresser was a freecycle item we stained and added new hardware..but am thinking of switching to a high chest. Her bookcases are brown but they will be replaced by this unit.

I guess I *could* paint the unit a lighter color but was more likeminded to decorate with more girly colors to tone down the wall unit.

I think it is nice. I would go ahead and add the bright storage bins for now (like the cloth ones target and everyone has), along with a doll etc here and there. make sure to girlie up the bed and windows, and you will be all set, and she can take it with hher when she moves out in a year or twenty! ;-)

I think so. Fuirst of all you can get a "waterfall" Roman which is a bit softer looking. Still, the clean lines will look neat and contemporary with that piece, and can grow with her (I wouldn't go with bubble gum pink). Also, you save money because you can opt to skip a top treatement and you have tackled esthetics and privacy in one step!

Are you thinking custom or ready made? Can we see some photos please!

Yes I like the idea of the waterfall roman shades and if it can solve the idea of curtains that would be fine too.

I would have to go with custom treatments because of the size of the window (70 1/2W x 42 L) <span style="font-style: italic">(found the measurements on the existing blinds ) </span>

a girlkia choose the wall color and yes the new duvet is on the list but the colors may be in that family.

Kia, consider mounting the Roman at ceiling height, which does add length to the product overall but when raised you can bring it right to teh top of the inside window frame. You get the illusion of more height in the window, max light, and window dressing to boot.

Another option is to mount a rod that way, add amaybe three flat ready made valances (for fullness) and use a blind that is a hybrid and use it for light control, while still getting the same illusion. See me?
