I just dragged my regular coffee table out of my living room and it's on it's way to my studio. A few years ago I picked up an old flat top steamer trunk that's a medium dusty blue color with nice unpainted wood framing. It's been in my bedroom holding blankets and sweaters and such since I got it but it is now my coffee table! I like having it in here so far this first night, because it's tall and is a great place to put my laptop and there's room for other stuff too like candles and such. I haven't gotten to that stuff yet though. The trunk will go nicely with a cushy comfy couch I nabbed at an estate sale a week or so ago.

It's too tall for a foot rest...which BTW, I dragged one in here today from out in the garage where I've been storing it for years. It's one of those nice heavy vintage ottoman's and now it's in front of my antique mission oak tall backed rocking chair. The chair has also been in my bedroom for the last 12 years so now it almost feels like I got a whole new living room.

The steamer trunk coffee table is sure to be the most functional piece of furniture I have if this evenings test run is any indication!

I was thinking of tiling the top, but the paint was right there and sooo much cheaper &amp; easier. Not to mention lighter.
I have since painted the rest white, but am thinking of going with black instead...

Coffee table in the living room is just for display, but the one in the den is functional. Lawd the many functions that one have

So, is that a wood top? How did you mark of the squares?

Yes Pepper, I did.

I cut out 2 cardboard not perfectly square squares and traced them onto the table with a black marker, trying not to make them perfectly aligned. It is very &quot;mickey moused&quot;

I used craft paint then did the edges of the &quot;tiles&quot; with some watered down black for shading just to try &amp; give them a little dimension.

Topped it with a couple of coats of satin finish poly-eurethane.

It is a wood (veneer) top and it was in crappy shape when my brother gave it to me. I sanded it just a little. It's roughly about 3' x 3', the rest has since been painted white, but i'm considering changing it to black satin.

Anyway, it's a fun piece that would have otherwise been trashed cos it was uuuuugly!!

And most importantly... *<span style="text-decoration: underline">I</span>* like it!!

Dahjah, my taste is not for everyone!!
If I get tired of that design I have gallons of primer. I can cover it up and make a whole new table.
