Dang Tomatoes

wont turn red

they should have ripened in early August but they are still green. I dont want green tomatoes

I am not a gardener Nylah but if it helps our tomatoes were late this year. What we usually get in July/August we are now getting in Sept.

so maybe you will get some red ones before <span style="text-decoration: line-through">unno freeze ova</span>it cools down up there

I am still hoping and praying that they ripen before the Bill Chill sets in I was kinda curious if this was a problem for other since pretty much everywhere had long winter season.

I purchased early ripening tomatoes plantlings but that didnt benefit me atall.

Last year, I had a different variety but they ripened towards the end of August.....but then an early frost killed off the plant.

my tomatoes were crappy
i still have lots of green ones, and most that did ripen were dry and spongey like..
same did happen to my peppers

although, Lorna was eating fresh tamarind on the deck and threw seeds in the garden, and a couple sprout up..wonder if i root them up an put them inside and then replant next year i get a tree

<span style="color: #3333FF">We had tomatoes and tomatoes and more tomatoes. I'm canning a batch now, I cooked them down with onions and garlic and other things. MrBlue told me we'd have a lot of tomatoes, but I wasn't ready. I'll know better next year. </span>

MrsBlue, so you cook them down with the onion and garlic and then can them? Is that it? What are the &quot;other things&quot; you put in?

A woman I know just told me to pick the tomatoes even though they are green and put them in a cool dark place in the basement. I was thinking that they are so green that that might not work but since I have nothing to lose, I am gonna give that a try.

also Nylah green tomatoes is very good with cod-fish.

and no I do not have a recipe

I ate it in Antigua this year someone I went to University with that returned to her country when she finished school. I spent sometime with her this year and dang the dishes were good.

I think food just taste better in the islands, me nevva even bodda ask her for the recipe because I know I would not be able to recreate the taste cho

Then, there is always fried green tomatoes with bacon/eggs and sausages.

with the red ones you can just pick them and freeze dem just so.. and then defrost when you need to cook with them.

HIMdaughta - the last time I froze red tomatoes (which was awhile ago) when they defrosted they had a mealy quality to then So, I just made tomato sauce out of them instead of eating them fresh. You never have that problem when you froze them?

St Bess and stormmey - I have heard that you can fry green tomatoes and even saw some recipes on Epicurious for green tomatoes but to be honest, they thought just doesnt appeal to me! But it looks like I need to give it a try because these dang things are still green We have been having a warm streak and I thought that would help the tomatoes out but it has been to no avail

They were supposed to be stewed tomatoes but I let them cook too long and the result is more tomato sauce. It was good, though. I added seasonings like basil and oregano, salt and pepper, some lemon juice. Onions, garlic, possibly celery. If you pressure can you have to adjust the time and weight for the extra vegetables.

The first ones I canned, though, I didn't cook. Just peeled and canned in water and lemon juice. Some with a little onion or garlic added in, also uncooked.</span>
