Hanging Pictures

I have had these paintings I bought last year at the Home & Garden show in my spare bedroom because I am completely intimidated by the whole hanging pix thing.

I tried to tackle it 2 weekends ago and gave up

I finally called my brother over to help, and eve then it took an hour to get the things up

And they still arent perfectly level

I have 2 mirrors I need to hang now - anyone got some pointers to keep in mind when trying to hang them up?

I got all the tools: leveler, proper hooks, drill, etc but yet the whole thing overwhelms me.

Things You’ll Need:
Pencil
Level
Anchor bolts or picture hangers
Hammer
Screw driver

Step1
Determine the kind of wall on which you're going to hang the picture. If you're hanging the picture on drywall, you'll need an anchor bolt to keep the weight of the picture from pulling the hanger out of the wall. If the wall is solid wood, masonry or has studs underneath it, regular picture hangers will work, as long as they're the right size.

Step2
Weigh the picture and select the proper size toggle bolts or hangers. Different sizes available according to the amount of weight they'll hold. It's best to go to larger size than to use one that's too small.

Step3
Hold your picture up at eye level on the wall where you'll be hanging it. Use a pencil to mark the area of the wall at the top center of the picture.

Step4
Measure the distance between the hangers on the back of the picture and divide the number by two. Measure and mark that distance on either side of the mark you placed on the wall. Make sure the placement mark for your hangers is visible and precisely where you want to place the hangers.

Step5
Place a level on the wall at the point where you placed the marks, then draw a level line to connect the three marks. The length of the line should be the same as the distance between the hangers on the back of the picture.

Step6
Insert a toggle bolt or hanger at each placement mark.

You all didnt see that I already have all the hanging accessories I dropped about $100 on levelers, hooks, tape mesures, etc in Home Depot and a lot of good it did me

We did use the string/tape measure to get the distance from the ceiling to the edge of the pix. And then used one of the levelers that has a pix marking thingy on it to get the right distance from the top of the pix to the hanging hook on the back. But when we did the second picture, even after we measure twice, it still is slightly higher than the first.

Now the dnag mirrors we tried to do, the distance from the hooks on the wall and the hooks on the back look like they are even but the mirror wont mount properly.

Now my brother dropped the mirror when he was trying to get it onto the hooks and I have to find a creative way to cover up the corner crack

Mary,
Try this.

Get a thin piece of board or a stick which is longer than your pictures are tall by about a foot. It must be strong enough to hold up your picture or mirror.t

Put a screw through the top of the board/stick so that the pointy end is about 3/4 of the way through and the head sticking out far enough to hang your (already strung) picture or mirror on.

So you or your assistant are now holding up your picture at the end of the stick.
The picture wire is over the screw between the screw head and the stick and the pointy end of the screw is facing the wall.

Have your assistant get the picture right where you want it and then tap the picture lightly in front of where the screw is in the back.

Doing that will leave a little mark on the wall telling you exactly where you should put your picture hanger to have the picture hanging EXACTLY where you want it.

This really works well and easily and I've used this method many times when I worked as a handyman and had to rehang people's pictures after I had painted or papered a room.

Keep the screw stick in your closet for hanging things later.

Nylah!! trust me just go into one of them Art Shop and ask them to recommend a picture hanger. The Mister and male and female family members tried hanging some paintings for me and blood almost shed. Them ruin one of my pics. now I have to get it remaatted it not worth the agravation atallatall.

johnnycakes, I'm just gonna print out what you typed above and let me brother sort it out. I have no spatial intelligence whatsoever but I think i follow what you said. We still have the mirrors to go up. He hasnt come over to help me again because I got so annoyed that he chipped one of my mirrors but we need to give it another go this week.

Stormmey, I am just to cheap to get someone from an art store to come do my dirty work It really shouldnt be hard to hang pictures but I just dont have that kind of visual capabilities. You would never want to cross a bridge that was built by me!

Nylah, it it not that expensive really, considering that they take into account the size of the wall, the dimension of the pic and the furniture you have in the room as to where the painting should be hung.

Plus!! it takes away <span style="font-weight: bold">my </span>homicidal tendency to expire the person who ruined my painting. Also!! if the picture hanger damage something they are liable as far as repairs go.
