because you want to put it at a location where people are going to gather around.
most furniture placement in a room with fireplace, will usually center around the fire. if you put the screen on a separate wall, you are left trying to configure the chairs etc to see the tv on that separate wall.

Plus most of the homes are being built with the opening for a TV over the fireplace.
imho no TV in living room if a family or tv room available
a nice set of built in bookshelves
ok back to the family room.. I think the problem in the pic is that the TV looks like it is on the mantel.. It may look better being mounted above the mantel..
or scale down the size of the tv.. bigger may not always be better
