I looked into them 3 years ago when they had a booth at a Home & Garden show.
My only issue with them is the $2500 "membership" fee
you have to be doing some serious renos in order to make that fee worthwile otherwise the savings wouldnt offset it atall.

yeah, I choked when she told me that and promptly handed the woman back her registration form
I mean, if I was doing a 40K reno then I cant *maybe* see it, but I was looking only to change my kitchen counter tops and the market cost for the new granite was the price of the memebership fee alone.
They look good but I dont feel they are worth the dollars.....

My husband and I thought about buying a new house but we decided to stay put and redo the kitchen. After seeing the ads of those happy (sometimes annoying couples) on TV talking about their brand spanking new kitchen, we decided to give Direct Buy a shot. I never knew how staggering the mark up on kitchen cabinents really was. The cabinets we really wanted retailed for about $12,000 and we got them at DB for $6,800. just that one purchase paid for our memberships. I keep thinking this is nuts but the savings just keep piling up. Don't be a sucker any more.

After seeing what seemed like 100 commericals for the this Company...I called the 1-800 number and visited a showroom in my hometown. It was NOT what I expected. The showroom I visited was super nice and all but I ended up saying "no thanks". I knew a membership was involved but hello...I was thinking Costco at 50 bucks a year. If I had a need to make some real purchases... I am pretty sure I would have saved some serious $$$...but for me in my rented apt. - no can do! All in all, I am glad I went and the people were nice and all...but it wasn't for me.

Thank heaven we joined direct buy last year... with the stock market going down my membership is more important than ever. We still need to spend on household items over the next 5 years and the savings from buying direct will sure come in handy. We saved enough to justify our membership fee early on - so its all GRAVY from here.

Hi, I have been a member of direct for about a year now. So far we have bough several things there. We are a young couple and when we bought our first house DB offered us a membership. We thought the membership was a little pricy but we figured we could get it back in the savings. I will tell you, I can't tell you anywhere I can go and save that much money. Just in the last two weeks, I bought a siverware set, a whirpool duet washer and dryer, and a whole living room suit and my total savings was 2500.00. I don't think these people are looking at the right items if the stuff was more expensive!! I have never had that problem no matter what I was looking for. Being a young mother of two, who wants to make her house look wonderful for company, and anybody, I completely recommend DB to anybody. Thank you DB for saving me sooooooooooooo much money!!
The reviews confirms my thoughts about DB. If you are doing some serious renos and plan to spend some cash then the fees will be offset by the overall savings. Otherwise it isnt for your average shopper.
what about dem one day bathroom fitters? the ones that put new sittn over your old tub? i heard they're expensive too, but the one day and done thing is mighty appealing.

if you can avoid a bathroom fitter then I would suggest it. The previous owners of our home did that and we had a case where there was a leak between the fitting and the tub underneath.. So you could stand in the tub and move the water We have not pulled it out yet but it is in phase 2 of the bathroom remodel.
What may be a better option is to reglaze the tub & tiles.

This is true. We signed on years ago when we renovating our home to make a spot for my mother. The savings on the cabinets alone was the cost of membership and we continue to get savings today.
The best savings are on the high end items in any category which when the discounts apply are the same cost as a mid range item in the same category.
The downside is you do not usually have someone to handhold and help you choose your items. What many people have done is gone into showrooms to look at the items they like, get the advice they need and then order it from db
If you don't fight for what you deserve, you deserve what you get.

Yes the membership fee is high, but the money you save on one big project more than makes up for the fee.
I re-did a bathroom end of 2007..total re-do. Ripped everything out down to the beams. When I compared prices, I think I saved over 5K. But like they said, it pays if you are going high-end.
But for the bathroom, the cost of re-doing it mid to low end was the same as doing it high end through direct buy.
I was in progress of looking at the kitchen re-do...but the economy put that to a halt.
BTW, after the first years fee, the renewal is less than $200.
