To be sure you’re using a product that actually kills germs, Scott suggests looking for an Environmental Protection Agency registration number on the label. And watch for two words: sanitize and disinfect. These are legal terms that guarantee that a product will meet certain specifications. “Sanitize” means it will kill 99.99 percent of specified bacteria within 30 seconds of application. “Disinfect” means it will kill all specified organisms within 10 minutes of application. It is possible for an agent to both sanitize and disinfect, depending on how long you leave it on.



One of the best and least expensive disinfectants is chlorine bleach, but in recent years, experts have been sounding the alarm about the use of chlorine bleach and its connection to dioxin, a potent, cancer-causing chemical that is persistent in the environment.



To kill germs but be kinder to the environment try any of these “green” disinfectants at home:


1. Vinegar and hydrogen peroxide
Susan Sumner, at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, was experimenting with organic acids in the mid-1990s when she discovered that this non-toxic combination could effectively disinfect household surfaces, including cutting boards. To try it, get two, clean spray bottles. Fill one with white vinegar (cider vinegar, which is brown, may stain countertops, she warns. Fill the other with three percent hydrogen peroxide solution, which is readily available in drug and grocery stores. Spray the vinegar on the surface first, then the hydrogen peroxide. The two combine to make peracetic acid, a potent germ killer that can wipe out Salmonella and E. coli. This method is safe enough, Sumner says, to even clean fruits and vegetables. Just rinse them under running water before eating. Be careful not to combine the two chemicals in one sprayer. The combination can produce peracetic acid at a dangerous concentration.

Why is bleach such a problem? One of the primary ingredients in conventional bleach is sodium hypochlorite. Not only is sodium hypochlorite not the most environmentally friendly chemical around, when it's mixed with household cleaners containing ammonia, chlorine gas is formed. When chlorine gas is formed, it can be easily inhaled causing damage to the respiratory tract and even death. This is obviously not something you want for you and your family, so why keep bleach in your home where the potential might exist? Even if bleach isn't mixed with ammonia based cleaning products, the hypochlorite found in conventional bleach isn't healthy. At high doses, sodium hypochlorite can injure nerve and liver cells and some people have allergic reactions to this substance.


Step2If you don't want to expose your family to these dangers, what are some alternatives to bleach? One of the simplest bleach alternatives to use when washing clothes is to substitute a third of a cup of borax for the bleach in each load of laundry. Borax will help to keep whites clean and bright and maintain the brightness of colors. Plus, it's inexpensive. You can also add three quarters of a cup of lemon juice to your washer during the wash cycle to get clothes brighter.


Step3How about an bleach alternative as a household cleaner? The one thing bleach has going for it is the fact that it's an effective cleaner that kills germs. One solution is to add one part lemon juice to one part white vinegar and dilute it with water. This solution can be placed into a spray bottle and used throughout the bathroom and kitchen as a safe and effective cleaner. Dilute hydrogen peroxide is also a safer alternative to bleach as a bathroom cleaner and is a good germ killer.


Step4Another way to avoid exposure to hypochlorite and chlorine gas is to use a non-chlorine bleach. These bleach alternatives are usually hydrogen peroxide based which is a safer bleach alternative. Although hydrogen peroxide isn't a poison, it can be irritating the mucous membranes of the nose and eyes. For this reason, if using a hydrogen peroxide for cleaning purposes, always wear protective goggles and gloves.

chlorine/bleach degrades quickly into sodium hypochlloride which is non toxic, then becomes salt.hence it is enviromentally friendly as mentioned DEGRADES QUIKLY!it decomposes in soil, and dilutes rapidly in storm sewers
you guys are blowing this out of proportion and dont let the tree huggers or the health nuts tell you otherwise.
grant you, you DO NOT want to mix bleach with anything acidic like drain cleaners, amonias soaps, or even lemon as someone mentioned.Mustard gas is chlorine gas.


bleach is non carcinogenic (cancerous)

I used to haul these products like Toluene from around the Ohio River area in West Virginia, when in the plant(Bayer/AGFA) we had to wear phosgene badges -Phosgene is a natural occuring organic agent from chlorine compounds.
you know, im glad I payed attention to my safety course at that plant, i actually learned something here that i could pass along

I will never stop cleaning with bleach. The problems arise when too much ratio to water is used cause you don't need much. To me it isn't clean if I don't use bleach to clean it. Maybe if I didn't live with dogs I would use something else but in some situations I think bleach is necessary.

I also add a small amount to each sink of dishes. Just a little, and that way the dish rags and counters/cupboards are disinfected for next use. I never use sponges either, they are disgusting I think.

i guess it all comes down to personal choice. after my baby was born, i stopped using bleach, I rarely used it then anyway. I figure she had the rest of her her life where she will be exposed to any toxins (same logic I use for junk food) therefore I don't feel the need to add to it while she under my roof.

when she turn 17, emancipated and gone off to college she can either be a semi tree hugger like me, or she can do her own thing and bleach dung har dorm room, where she might juss get a tump dung from her room mate

my mother is highly sensitive to cleaning products and has to leave the house is bleach is used. so no bleach in this house..
