Back Yard Questions

So yesterday I finally got rid of the last of the trees that I inherited when I moved in.

I have been having them pruned, and trimmed, till they were all cut down to stumps. Yesterday I had 5 stumps grinded out and now I need to figure out what to do next.

The backyard is in bad shape, no grass, just weeds and the few trees I have planted since I have been here. Now that I got rid of the the unwanted trees, I need to fix things up.

First I want to add a vegetable garden. I didn't realize that I would be left with all this nice fluffy mulch. Perfect for starting a garden.

So the spot that had the biggest tree was where I had in mind to start the garden. See it here:



That is the easy part. All I have to do is get soil and section off the area and get to gardening.

Right next to that is my banana walk.


This morning I transferred some of the mulch over to these trees.

So here is my first question. Although I didn't plan out the photos very well, the banana walk is a couple feet away from my vegetable garden. You can kind of see it in the first photo. I plan to section off the area where the bananas are, and then add more soil.

Should I lay down grass in between the garden and the bananas?

OK...yeah...I would put up some type of barrier around the garden and put down grass in the rest of the yard.

Something like this Pepper. Hope it's not too big here.

that could work if pepper was willing to put her veggie garden in a different spot.

as i see it now...i don't get where the banana walk takes you...cause you walk into the fence. if you want to put the veggie garden right there beside those banana plants, i'd just run the soil right up to the bananas. plant yer calaloo over there, and it will prob do fine.

i think it's a great idea. so pepper, let's see the rest of the yard, maybe you could move your veggie garden to the left end? i can't see how much room you have. that way...you could incorporate something like compry has there.

wouldn't be too hard to do.

On the other side of the soon to be veggie garden are more trees. I don't think putting grass under the trees is the best option...grass needs lots of sun to thrive doesn't it?

Should I just lay down mulch under the trees?
And then what about the areas that are not shaded by trees, grass?

This is around the corner...look at that mulch!

I was thinking of an orange and a lemon tree on this side. They don't grow too big and this side is narrow, so that would work well over there.

Grass where there is no tree? And then towards the back, that is the other side of the trees. I am thinking mulch under there as well. I just don't know.

ok...would you kill me if i said move the bananas to the center of the back fence? that way...you can create a "walk" from the center of the yard either left to the bananas and on to the trees or right to the nice garden like compry showed you can put in that other corner. put the lawn in front of that. the walk down the center could go thru the middle of your veggie garden...or have lawn on the right and veggie on the left of the path?

by the way, up here, grass prefers cool weather, not hot sun all day. but that all depends on what kind of grass you plant, and the stuff you plant down there is nothing like our grass up here.

lets put some horseshoe pits in that back spot...with a hammock under the mango too.

i love blue plumbago...could plant a whole hedge of it against one side.

I am challenged in this area. Besides I wouldn't know the first thing about moving a banana tree.

ok...leave the bananas...and put compry's garden in front of it. move the veggies to the center. i like the idea of a sitting area in that space behind the house over by the mango too...so you can sit in the sun or shade.

I agree with this. It would be great if you could move those banana trees either to the center as loops suggested or to the side of the house. The flow would be much better to contend with.
