I found this story...
'Cash for Refirgerators': Like Clunkers, But For Appliances
Federal Program Will Offer Rebates on New Energy-Efficient Home Appliances

Cash for refrigerators? Yes, and other appliances. It may be time to replace that old washing machine.

A program that kicks in this fall will give consumers cash to help buy more energy-efficient home appliances. There's no trade-in required, as in Cash for Clunkers. A program that kicks in this fall will offer consumers cash to help buy new home appliances. The federal government has set aside $300 million for the program as part of the economic stimulus plan.
There's no trade-in required, as in the government's "cash for clunkers" deal with consumer car trade-ins. But rebate checks will be issued that can be used to cover everything from refrigerators and dishwashers to furnaces and air conditioners.
The Department of Energy hopes to encourage conservation by getting consumers to replace old, wasteful appliances with new, more efficient Energy Star certified machines. But the appliance industry, reeling from the recession and a drop in sales, also hopes the rebates will provide a much-needed sales boost.

OK so my question is how much will it cost to get rid of the old stuff? I haven't seen about that but I used to work at the recycling center and people were forever complaining about the price to drop off appliances and TV.

Re: Cash for old Home Appliances program
We used to have a yearly mailing that would be good for a family to drop off up to two appliances. You wouldn't believe the amount of people that would start yelling at us because TV wasn't included. Like they thought TV was an appliance!
No man, that's a electronic and back then we charged 20 bucks a TV.
Appliances were 12.00 at the time.
So, now I see this program is a rebate and not upfront at purchase. That takes the glory out of it some too. Well kind of. I would really like a water saving new clothes washing machine!
