Vegetables: late summer/early fall plantings.

I live in zone 7 and I've cleaned out my raised garden bed readying it to plant vegetables to harvest before first frost.

I am thinking of kale, bokchoy, and snap peas.

What are your experiences with planting home garden for late harvest?

I live in zone 3 so I dont technically do a early fall planting since we have no idea when old man winter may show up.

but the vegetables I plant certain vegetables in August for harvesting early fall.

carrots
beets (can keep in ground til frost comes for us)
kale
spinach
bok choy
pumpkin
squash and other gourds

Zone 10 here. We are just getting started.

I should be done planting this weekend, will post a picture when I am done. However, I do have a question. I have romaine lettuce planted and I am wondering if a couple of the plants are developing 'normally'.

Hmmm, I didn't really take a good picture of the one in question. But it is the plant in the foreground of the photo. Cabbage in the back is doing fine.

Pepper, those look healthy! I planted kale, collard, bok choi, snap peas, and parsley. The first three in the cabbage family have all been eaten up and are now holey holey

Do you use any thing to kill bugs on your cabbage and lettuce?

OK, so what's with the flowers on the lettuce? Is that how they grow?

The bugs down here don't bother with the cabbage or the lettuce. I haven't sprayed them with anything. At least not yet....

Down here they like peppers (hot and sweet), tomatoes and sumting else me have out deh. Can't membah right now. But on those plants I used Neem oil, organic pesticide. Seems to be working well so far.

Zone 6 and everything has been harvested but last weekend I saw more carrots popping out. I'd planted sweet corns and those came out great. Carrots, turnips and radishes came out okay though a bit on the small size. Okras galore and I left most of it on the plant, so they just dried up. I've saved the pods/seeds for next year's planting What did not do well this year were the peppers and I don't know if it has anything to do with turnips and radishes planted so close to them but my peppers just did not produce well. The bananas did not produce but they grew to over 5 feet.

zone 9 - collard greens, lettuce, peppers, eggplant, okra, papchoy(sp)and cabbage.

Everything looking great, but the cabbage don't fold, but the leaves big and green. Will just cut them up and cook.

The eggplant was looking kind of droopy but looking alot better.

Hi. I am in Zone 10 as well and my lettuce gives off flowers (bolts) when it gets too hot. When that happens the leaves will have a tendency to be bitter. Maybe you planted it a bit too early. Lettuce likes it cool.

Someone told me I neede to pinch them back. I did that this morning. I'll see if they come bitter. I planted in Mid October.
