Lowes sell certain brands of goods (eg Pella Windows and certain applicances)

Home Depot sell the competing brands (eg Andersen Windows , certain brands of applicances).

other than that they are about the same..

the contractor provided the sheetrock & materials.

My experience is that contractors, builders, plumbers, etc all say they LOATHE the big box stores and they deal with others supply companies for builders (eg builders general, local plumbing stores, etc). They claim that the materials sold to the big box stores is lesser quality than what is sold to other suppliers.

Yeah, I have heard the same complaint.

I figure for basic items the mass produced goods will do. Boards, bulbs, screws, nuts, bolts, etc. Otherwise, use a local distributor.

I know the lumber sold at Home Depot is pretty much B-grade crap. I always purchase lumber at a local lumber company up here and it is <span style="text-decoration: underline">MUCH</span> better quality for only pennies more than Home Depot.

If you <span style="font-weight: bold">MUST</span>... if you <span style="text-decoration: underline">HAVE</span> to choose between one these - go with Lowes.

Even if it's for the customer service alone - it's slightly better than Home Depot. At HD, it's pretty much non existent.

I know that at Lowe's you can order from a huge variety of companies products that are not carried at the store and which are of whatever quality you can afford. This goes for doors, windows, appliances, home decor, just about anything.
Special orders take about 7-10 days to arrive.

Lowe's does have a much better customer service policy than does HD but, of course there are always stores and times of shopping that will make for a better or worse shopping experience.

Lowe's lumber is a better quality than is Home Depot's .

Home Depot may have slightly lower prices in the building materials area but you have to paw through the racks for lumber without flaws. The lower quality goes with the lower price at least in that area.

To repeat, your shopping experiences will vary from store to store and from one shopping time to another.

An example: I was at Lowe's this past Sunday around 12:30 and the store was packed with shoppers but just about 1:00 the store emptied out as a good many shoppers headed for home to watch the Patriot's football game.

At 12:30 you had to wait in line to get paint or talk to the appliance people but after 1:00 I was in and out really quickly with what I needed.

This shows that a shopping experience can vary widely within the same store within an hour.

Rona buys first quality runs from lumber mills.
I only buy from Rona as far as lumber.
Homeless Depot---no thanks prefer Lowes or Rona
