Yes, my unit is on its last legs. But di tech said it wi prolly carry me through till we cool dung. But me musn't tink bout me and dis unit having anything fi do wid next summer.

But thankfully, we are moving to the cooler months now, so me have time to shop and compare.

So tell me, what me a look for when me shopping? Di house is roughly 2,000 square feet, on one story. And me in Florida, so me can't get no lightweight unit.

I am familiar with the Trane brand, don't know about Lennox. But still, me nuh know di pertinent questions fi ask.

what kind are you replacing? a window unit or one that runs thru your furance - oh wait you all dont have furances down there - so I guess I mean are you referring to a central unit type?

I installed a central unit a few yrs ago - which runs thru my furnace and an sits as a unit outside the house - so I was gonna recommend it but if you are set up like we are up here then it makes no sense.

YOUR FURNACE
How old is ur furnace? Does ur ac unit run thru it? If so, what efficiency is ur furnace – is it 80 or 90+? Heaven forbid 60?! If ur furnace is an 80% efficiency, do u want to upgrade to the 90? Don’t forget about the energy tax credit, blah, blah, blah.

BRANDS
Don’t get too hung up on the brands at this point. Every single brand out there has had some complaints over time. For every person you find having a problem with Trane, you’ll find a person who’s never had an issue. That said (And aI know this may seem contradictory) there are some with better track records than others. I like to think of it in terms of cars. There are some brands that are the “Yugo” of furnace and others are the “Maserati”.

Yugo = friedrich, tempstar amana

Honda = carrier, goodman

Maserati = trane, york

THIS IS ONLY MY PERSONAL OPINION.

When you talk to the technicians, each will tell you that theirs is the best.

So it guh!

Let me tell you this! This is the most important of all! It’s critical you get a company with loads of experience to do the install. You could have the best ac unit in the world installed but if it’s put in wrong – pure hell.

You also need to question them on what PARTS and what LABOR they warrantee and what the manufacturer warranties.

Pepper - I forgot – after next year <span style="font-style: italic">(I believe – double ck because I cant recall the cut off date)</span> federal regulations will require ac maunfacturers to produce units that are 13 SEER or above.

Don’t let the people you use sell you one that’s less than 13 SEER!

If you have now, or have them put in –13, yuh gwain salt down di road.

-13 uses R22 refridgerant. This is going to be phased out. It’ll be replaced by 410A refridgerant.

Don’t get anything that uses R22!

Where in Florida are You? Can you give me some information , eg. Make, Model and Serial number of your unit. Location of Condenser( The noisy piece out side) and location of Air Handler ( the quiet piece where you change the filters).

Don’t know if you are a tech or involve with the business. With few corrections your information are useful, and should be taking into consideration .I found your classifications somewhat interesting. You may or may not know that one in your Yugo class is made by one in your Maserati class, and one in your Honda class is now the leading manufacture in HVAC.
Next time you look on the name plate of a Tempstar note the BTU ratings for a 3 ton, and compare it with the BTU rating same tonnage of a York or even a Carrier.
By the way you leave out the Rolls Royce of the Industry. LENNOX
Trane boast longevity, the unit itself although good their accessories are the best, such as there air purification system

You are correct there is no a perfect brand they all will break sometime or another. Likewise they are no perfect refrigerant. But the buzz words today, and what one should look for when considering replacement, add on or new installation are EFFICENCY, ENERGY CONSUMPTION, and WARRANTY. Most manufacture today is offering 5yrs.on parts 10 yrs on compressors. Some includes labor. Some will cover everything for 10 yrs.
By law 10 SEERS can no longer be sold in the USA, its 13 and above, bear in mind that the higher the SEERS the more costly the unit to purchase and installed, however you will save in Government rebate and energy consumption. There are other things to be taken into consideration when moving to higher SEERS, such as the size of the line sets (call liquid and suction line) your duct work should also be looked at, you may have to do some work on them if you go up in SEERS, due to the fact that the higher SEER unit air velocity and cfm will be quite different that that of your old 10 SEER. They must be of the appropriate size to accommodate the new unit and higher SEER especially if the refrigerant is 410A.

It is true that R22 is on its way out, R410A is still not the perfect refrigerant, as a matter of fact, it is causing much cause for concerns in the industry, as it is not doing what it is supposed to do and make the equipment too heavy to handle and the high cost that is associate with it.
With regards to furnace, if you like your gas furnace, then keep it, it’s more efficient when it comes to heating, the question is do you need it in Florida, if is so where. Frankly, South Florida need only heat pump, with a small back up heat strip say 5KW.

Your personal opinion is to the point and correct. 90% of problem with HVAC units is due to improper installation procedures. Parts and Warranty both manufacturer and installer should be noted on any contract, and by the way do nothing without a written contract and Florida law clearly states that a permit must be issued by the building Department on any new installation, depend on the level of change out you may also need a permit for partial change out. MAKE CERTAIN THE CONTRACTOR IS LICENSE BY THE STAE OF FLORIDA, not just for the County you live in. State license contractors in general have more years of experience and are more qualified. State licensed contractor license start with the letters CAC followed by numbers.
Therefore its is critical as suggested to choose a company with a great track record, and believe me if one live in the Miami, Fort Lauderdale areas they are quite a number of scam and down right no good Company. The thing about it homeowners fall for the cheap; instead of going to myflorida.com and have the contractor license checked out they fall for the sweet talk.
