Roses - Best time to buy/plant

So, I am taking up some serious gardening this coming spring.
We now have a garden and a good enough size. Very happy bout dat.
I promised myself that the first thing I would put in the ground was a rose, a deep red rose.

My questions are:
When is the best time to plant?
Do roses stay out in the winter?
I am looking for a deep red, anyone know the name of a deep red and a white?
Any other tips would be welcomed!

juss know that you gonna have to devote some time to the rose bush. dem very hearty ahn dem hard fi dead...i know...i've all but pour bleach on the bush in front of my house ahn it still out deh. they grow fast and ferious.

i have a pink one and a white one...not sure what them call though.

Coless, when to plant depends on where you live. Have you confirmed your temp zone yet? That would be the first thing.

Then when u are looking at the roses you want they will specify their growing zone as well.

I am not a rose person at all so I cant give any advice in that regards. I find them difficult, needy and prickly to deal with

but I am sure others will have some good info for you.

Usually autumn or early spring are the better time to plant. First 3 weeks of planting you'll need to water well so that the plant can establish roots. One reason why I prefer planting in spring. However the roses that I've planted in fall are doing just as good.

They are hardy plants and will last the winter. I used to prune back my rose bushes for the winter but not any more. When spring comes around I'll cut the dead or damaged canes.

Plant in full sunlight. If planting more than one, give 4 feet of space as the plants will need the extra spacing for growth.

I have a deep blood red rose that puts out huge blooms and a lovely scent throughout the year. I know it is not hybrid because it is a long stemmed red rose. The other rose bushes are beautiful hybrids.

I will check out my temp zone, but I am way up north.
I called around to a couple garden stores here yesterday and their roses dont come in till February so I will go by there then. I also got a couple online catalogs, so waiting for those to get delivered.

Some of the ones I am looking at are:
Lava flow - I think these are red
Legends - red
Fair Bianca - white
Fragrant Cloud - mixed colors

I hear they can be pesky, but I just love how they look. Maybe I will also get some runners so that way I dont have to trim as much if they run along the fence.
