Pillows

I'm in the market for new pillows and would like to upgrade. Currently I have pillow from Macy's. 2 sets of Ralph Lauren and 1 set of Calvin Klein.

I am figuring they are middle-of-the road pillows, and I would like to upgrade. I have never given much thought to purchasing pillows before, but as I <span style="font-style: italic">mature</span>, my neck and back are letting me know I need to think before I buy.

Does anybody know anything about good/better/best pillows?

A really cheap mattress is likely to leave you tossing and turning (see mattress report), but is the same true for pillows? We sent 71 staffers home with an expensive and an inexpensive pillow of the type they normally use: polyester, feather/down, or memory-foam. Each panelist was instructed to sleep on each pillow for five consecutive nights. And, while fully awake, our textile expert assessed the pillows' construction quality.
What we found

Although some testers said that expensive polyester-filled and down-filled pillows were more comfortable than their cheaper counterparts, personal preferences about pillow firmness, fluffiness, flatness, and size were almost as important. For memory-foam pillows, the inexpensive and pricey versions offered about the same comfort, sleep quality, and construction quality. Depending on their preferences, memory-foam fans could have saved more than $60 by buying the less expensive pillow.
How to shop

Compare firmness by placing pillows on a flat surface and compressing them with your palm to about half of each pillow's original thickness. The more pressure you have to apply, the firmer the pillow. The faster the pillow returns to its original shape, the more resilient. Check for neat stitches, straight seams, evenly distributed filling, a usable zipper, and piping that reduces wear on the edges. A tightly woven cover protects the fill. Memory-foam pillows can have an odor, so take a good sniff. Tempur-Pedic claims its pillows' odor dissipates over a short time with regular use.

It doesn't look like it matters. Other than a pricey pillow possibly lasting longer, it comes down to what the user prefers.

I never tried a memory foam pillow, but have tested the tempur-pedic mattress...didn't like at all.

if you into feather I can attest to the fact that the pricey-er ones are the way to go. Not necessarily brand name (I have never bought a brand name pillow) but I do have 2 hand crafted goose down pillows and they are around 10 years old. I also have 2 memory foam from Zellers (like walmart) and I like that they stay cool but lawd dem can get flat so mi haffie stack dem up

Thanks Tanya. I used to love my down feather pillows. Then one day I started sneezing everytime I put my head on them.

I had a really good set of down pillows, but I believe the ex-hubby must have taken them. I haven't found any like them since or maybe I just haven't been looking in the right places.

They were fully down (no feather quills) and let your head kind of sink in but no so much that it would push flat to the mattress. They were light yet supportive and didn't get hot.

I believe I ordered them off QVC or got them from Montgomery Wards when they were going out of business.

I make my own pillows .. I buy the chipped foam from WalMart , found in the craft section .., use an old pillow case , stuff it, and sew the top of the pillow case. I am able to make my pillows as firm as I want to and by using worn pillowcases, I dont have to stress about measurements or sewing the case.

The chipped foam dont get flat eda .. Well dem last till mi ready fi change dem . I HATE flat pillows .

mi come from a long line of seamstresses and tailors inna mi family. Widouth their influence, mi prolly wudn tink of it miself.
