Gas seems to be the popular option but is it really the best form of heating in terms of price and all. I recently found a nice home to buy in northern NJ but it has oil heat (above ground tank). The conversion to gas will cost about $10G. Does anyone have oil heat and what is your exprience?

Re: Oil versus Gas
I’ve no experience in the conversion, sorry.
When we were hunting LY, we saw a good # of places that were oil but after thinking it thru, decided against it.
My main feeling was environmental.
A relative told me that no matter what, that at some point in time, no matter what it’s made of, it’s going to leak and contaminate.
An Uncle of mine lives in Massachusetts and lived in an oil heated house for about 20 years – said he’d never do it again.
Some of his complaints were arranging delivery and one time many years ago, they flooded the basement with oil. I’m sure that’s prolly a rare occurence tho.
My husband opposed the idea because of cost – he felt that heating oil is going to keep going up sharply over time – more so than the gas to heat the house – and it’s too much on the pocket.

Re: Oil versus Gas
my brother has oil heat and he is always complaining about remembering to schedule deliveries and the cost of oil as well. I am opposed to oil for the environmental reasons
If you are still negotiating, can you drop the price in the negotiation to cover the cost of the conversion.
When you do convert make a point to have them take OUT the oil tank. Someone we know had an oil tank that was no longer used and it leaked. The cost to repair it isIf you don't fight for what you deserve, you deserve what you get.

It may not seem like anything now, but oil is a big headache. I don't care what anybody tells you. </div></div>
I thought as much. Thanks
