Here is banana tree, which is really not a "tree" but a banana plant



The pod is where the unripe aka green bananas form and develop and eventually emerge from. Notice that the bananas which have emerged in the image below are not fully formed, meaning "dem nuh fit" and are not quite ready for eating in a meal of boiled banana, dumplin and salt mackerel.



Fully developed green bananas! The pod has shriveled and fallen off the mature bunch.

Skelly I'm in Illinois and not too far from Saint Louis MO.

The temps here get hot and humid in the summer and the winter freezing cold

The banana plants I hrought back from Portland about 4 yrs ago. I cut these down, and store the rootball indoor over the winter. Come spring I'll replant outside. If they have young offshoots, I'll break those off and put in a nice pot and bring it inside the house. They just need good lighting and regular watering and they'll keep very well indoors.

Last year I got some perennial banana plants and the woman at the garden store swear sey dem don't bear but they all started to push out pods with young banana. The fruit was very bitter. The perennial bananas, just cut them down to the ground and mulch heavily for the winter.

Spring I thought some of the root ball for some were done for; dash dem round a back on a pile. Bout a month later they were sprouting sucklings.
