Tip #5: Tossing a handful of salt on your fire on occasion is supposed to keep the chimney clean.

I would not rely on tip #2 . If you burn wood and have a brick chimney the creosote eventually builds up and can ignite a chimney fire which can leak through bricks that have lost the pointing (filler between the bricks) and burn your house down. . If you haven't had your chimney professionally cleaned for a while it might be a good idea to do so especially if you have an old chimney.
