Yes I am looking for a waterfeature for the yard but h ave to consider how my dog will interact with said feature and how to winterize it. I have not started research on them do.

we have a contained bamboo patch and I think it would be nice to have it incorporated within that area.

The patch has grown significantly since we started with the 15 bamboo trees and is home to birds that we hear at 4:45AM

Ah a Redbud! The sun light creating its own wonders on the leaves. We have so many Redbuds popping up here and there in the yard, nowadays, I pull them out.

Here is the variegated redbud. This type I found at the garden store few years ago. The native redbuds are all over the place.

Your dog will jump right in to your carefully planted and somewhat delicate brand new water garden on the first reasonably warm day.

And wouldn't you if you could.


I do not do anything to winterize the water garden except catch any frogs when it starts getting cool and take them to a real pond to winter over in the bottom mud.
The pickerel weed and the water lilies all come back after what looks like freezing solid in the water although it is likely the very bottom of the water is far enough below ground that it and the plants pots sitting on the bottom do not freeze solid.

I do empty it out in the spring, clear out the muck and dead leaves and start with new clear water. Otherwise not much else.

BUT... dogs and water gardens are not a good mix UNLESS you plan your garden to be unaffected by the dog's visits (all cemented rock, if rubber bottom is used, the dog's claws could be a problem you can't have exposed water plants or delicate ornamentation or unsecured rocks such as my entire water garden is made up of.)

It is a magnet for every small child with behavioral problems.

Otherwise .....go right ahead....... but put an electric fence around it.



Bamboo is noted for being a spreader and I heard it has to be BURNED down to the roots to stop it.

There is a type of bamboo we have in New England it only grows about six feet high and has a segmented stalk but is invasive and is usually found in big patches.

It dies down to the ground in the winter and regrows completely the next year .
Not much like the tropical bamboo at all but in the same family.

If you put a water garden next to the bamboo I believe you'll soon have the bamboo in and destroying your water garden as the bamboo inexorably spreads.

How will you be able to see it without cutting back the bamboo on an ongoing basis?

I try to design minimal maintenance into the yard since I usually don't have enough time to do all that I'd like to do and I have more work than I can really handle when it's spring and everything needs attention at the same time.

I usually can mellow out around mid-July though

we have a 3 ft rhizome barrier around the bamboo so it has been contained in the last 6 yrs &amp; with annual inspection against spreading when it shoots the roots in spring - we are managing it.

the plan would be to build the water feature on a patio to prevent spread


I dont know about burning but can see the value in bulldozing it when the time comes

It is interesting that YOUR Redbud's leaves are so much different from the ones on what I suppose are native Red bud's in my yard.

The leaves on mine are green, heart shaped and grow larger into summer are soft and compost easily.

The one off the deck provides the pergola with a nice sun dappled shade and perches for the birds going to and from the bird feeders.

i agree with the poster who said that your garden has a nice rustic feel. i envy the number of blooms your shrubs have put out, and especially your primrose and daylilies. mine are still in bud and its almost july.

i agree with the poster who said that your garden has a nice rustic feel. i envy the number of blooms your shrubs have put out, and especially your primrose and daylilies. mine are still in bud and its almost july. </div></div>

That white flowering thing is called deutzia.

The clematis is actually purple and it is in the sun and there are about six out now. That one was still wet from the rain. and made a nice picture.

Most of the daylilies have yet to bloom and the Asian lillies not until mid summer.

okay, i think i mistook your stella doro forday lily, altho i think they are a variety of day lily. these are stella doro, right?


my stella doros have not bloomed yet.

Never doubt yourself.
Those lilies in the picture ARE day lilies. We do have Stella D'oros (gold stars in Italian) elsewhere around the grounds but they are much shorter and bloom later in the summer. We also have another larger bed of day lilies that are in a variety of colors and some of which have a beautiful fragrance unlike most day lilies .

In real life woodchucks/ groundhogs run as soon as they hear or see humans and they can move FAST for fat, short legged animals.

How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

i've got one too. and i think it lives under the deck but craps on top of it. well, its either the groundhog (what i call them) or raccoons.
