GarageDoor - help

[Yuriatin]

Anyone here done a replacement of their garage door?

Ours is a hot mess - old, dingy, wood eating away in some areas, not level to the ground, gap in the corner at the top - I could on.

Any idea what wld be a reasonable cost?

Anyone care to share what they paid?

Our current is a single wooden door with 6 windows going left to right across the top.

We'll be replacing it with a similar style but not with a wooden one this go round - maybe a steel or a type of wood composite.

Am still researching the pros and cons of the diff materials.

I'd be so thankful for any thoughts.

I have not done a full replacement of the door before, but I did have a new opening device installed. It came with a couple of remotes and a keypad outside which I didn't have before. It was around $200 something and that was in 09.

That was my first one with windows on it, and quite frankly I prefer them without. It is something extra to clean and I accidentally left the light on at night a few times which almost screams "rob me".

The chain home improvement stores (home Depot, Lowe's) sell and will install a new garage door and there are companies that do only that sort of thing .

Make sure you get some sort of warranty with any installation from any installer.

The units have very powerful springs in them which if not properly installed and maintained can let go and you do not want to be standing there when that happens.

I'd avoid those units with windows as well for reasons already stated: privacy, security, more to clean, more to break.

You can go to Lowe's or call a garage door company and get all the free information you want. Business is slow in the real estate market and the people that sell and install garage doors will be very glad to come out and give you a free estimate.

We recently needed to replace a spring and the company we use was there in about two hours after we called.

Am avoiding the HD and Lowe's. I've been that rte before and they're always exceedingly overpriced. ie; the insulation of our attic about a year ago - they charge an arm and a leg as opposed to someone can go buy the material themselves and take the time and do it on one's own for a 10th the cost.

Not to mention, they don't do the work themselves - they farm the work out to local peeps and thus, the price becomes outrageous.

Anyway - yes, I've a few people coming out this week for estimates but I wanted some personal experiences.

As with any large ticket item, you must shop around and also go by word of mouth recommendations to get the best deal . Then there are services like Angie's List that sell you pros and cons of local businesses as told in anecdotal reports (I think)

I had no idea of how Lowe's or HD operate that end of things so thanks for the warning.

We use a company that only installs and services garage doors and they have been very good in their work and fair in their prices.
