"Shaky" Door

<span style="font-weight: bold">Problem:</span> Somehow the holes for the screws have become &quot;looser&quot; and the hinge is not as secure on the door-jamb. To shut the door requires a little lift, and trying longer screws doesn't work.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Question:</span> Is there a way to resolve this without having to have the door jamb replaced?

The screws can't have become thinner... ergo the screw holes must have become larger. Slightly wider screws might do the trick - completely filling the now-wider holes and picking the sagging door back up again, making the door jamb right again.

Mmm...how did the holes become larger? In any event, my options for screw size are limited by the holes on the hinge, so I cannot go with slightly wider screws.

Some of the holes in the wood may have become &quot;larger' just through constant use, temperature change resulting in the expansion/reduction of the door itself or perhaps the material of the door jam is of poor quality. Regardless, you can use lager screws as Witchy indicated. As far as you being restricted by the hinge to how large the screws you use are... get a drill bit that can drill through metal and can be used to enlarge the holes on the hinges.

Milo is right, ChurchDude. The holes got larger through wear and tear, humidity changes, pressure changes, etc.

Milo is also right in that you may need to use a drill on the hinges to enable you to use thicker screws. I should have told you that n the first place... sorry. I've had this problem, and I know the solution to it. That's why I posted. Your other option is to get hinges with screw holes one size larger (if you can), and rehang the door with the new hinges. I've had to do this, too.

Or you can keep lifting the door up when you open and close it, until your back gets tired of that.

That last part is not an option. Thankfully, it is loose enough just to be annoying. Thanks for the input.

You're quite welcome. I'm actually pretty handy about the house and good at 'handyman' kind of stuff. I can do basic electrical, basic plumbing, basic carpentry, painting (and all prep work)... I won't do wallpaper, and I can't do masonry. Other than that - I can do it, if I must. But don't tell Mr Witchy - shhhhhh
