Tomatos from yawd in mi yard!

I might not have Kia's scotch bonnets but dang if I don't have tomatoes grown from seed from yard tomatoes!

I got a little present this morning when I went visiting at farmers market where a friend is a grower.

Gen I have various growing challenges, so these plants are also growing in containers. Between my clay, and the deer and dogs and the weather, they are better off being portable. In fall I can put them right up next to the south wall and they should all be able to vine ripen.

I will take some pictures along the way!

I am so thankful to have scotch bonnet peppers to go with my yard tomatoes! Thank you Pepper for the peppers.

I have never started peppers from seed before so am trying two ways.

These little peat pots have always been good to me, there is a lid and the container is sitting on my hot water heater.



I put some seeds in this pot of soil which is a peat moss/vermiculite/compost mix. They are sitting on top of my water heater right now too, until the downpours stop sometime this weekend. They should be able to sprout there, says my grower friend.



Just to make sure we get peppers and since i don't have tons of faith in my seed starting I am sharing some with a friend who is the one who is responsible for my first Jamaica trips. She grows veggies for a living and sells at farmers market so I have more faith in her seed starting.

That's all I got for now. The tomatoes are growing in spite of the fact is has been raining, no pouring, for weeks with very little sunshine. I think at this point they are better off being in pots, since at least they drain.

I will come back with tomato plant pics after the rains.

HOT PEPPER SPROUT ALERT! Two weeks ago I planted the seeds. I have hovered thrice daily, faithfully moving them to warmest spots all along, and out of torrential downpours way. I have a sprout!!! Now if only I don't kill it. They are used to starting out in hot weather, which is good since it will be in the 90's today and tomorrow when lil sprout is at his most fragile age. Go sprout! (and may he have lots of little brothers &amp; sisters.


It will be 90's today and tomorrow so I hope I can manage not to kill it. I guess it is a good thing since they start so well in hot weather. This is new to me, usually from what I know, heat kills.

Full sun and heat baby. My scotchie's leaves really started picking up when the temps soared.

Oh for pretty!!! I should show this to lil sprout! Sprout made it through today's heat. This is very odd to me, as we don't get many days a year like this. Maybe there will be more sprouts in the morning!

I will have to work hard to keep sprout hot and toasty, next month I imagine I will have to build him a little plastic house.

Peasie that is beautiful! I am getting excited as can be! I have one next sprout about to pop leaves, probably today. Lil sprout is 3 days old today and doing well.

I have a few haberneo plants I bought and planted in pots and I am starting to see small pea sized peppers appear!

My Jamaica seed tomatoes are taking off in our new found heat wave.

Things are much later starting up here on the tundra where we typically have frost up until around the June full moon.

I would love to see your peppers Kia! I have 2 so far. If these two grow up and produce and I don't have any more pop up I will still be happy.

Now that things are heating up outside and plants are starting to take off, I took some pics this morning. These are the three tomato plants from yard seeds.



I don't know why one is so much bigger than the other two. One of the smaller ones has some cutworm damage but just a little so it should be OK. The biggest one sure is pretty!




Habanero peppers



Anaheim peppers and Habanero, yes, I like it hot or not at all..



Pretty basil. I have been pinching it off and drying the leaves but I spotted a method of freezing them in coconut oil and they supposedly come out fresh so I will get some oil and try it!



The GRANDADDY of them all Roma tomato plant on my deck. This bush is at least a month or more older than the other tomatoes so I am thinking I have this to look forward to with them.



I am having a problem with cutworms, something new up here. I need batteries for my flashlights so i can go out at night and try to catch them. if that doesn't work then there is a spray called BT that will work, as advised by a local farmers market producer. sigh on the cutworms but these are my first veggies since I moved to the land of clay 16 years ago.

Re: Lil sprout

Lil Sprout had a shriveled leave the night before last, but I saw the second set of leaves starting to come up so I was hopeful. I have been bringing the pot in the house at night and setting it on top of my water heater, hoping to keep the temp a little warmer than the 50° we have at night.

I also have been keeping the soil moist enough in case more sprouts popped. There was a 3rd sprout over the weekend.

Well, the first two sprouts just up and died yesterday, almost disintegrated. I was so hopeful. Now I am down to the 3rd sprout that is just days old and will stop the excessive water trying to start more of the seeds I guess.

I am still not sure if it was the heat or the moisture or both, but so far I am a Scotch Bonnet failure. Maybe I will hover over the 3rd plant less and just let him be a plant.
