This was in the basement store room - COVERED with clothes, boxes, shoes, pots, vases - you name it - JUNK. <span style="font-style: italic">Do you see the saladmaster inside?</span> Saladmaster - that should tell u something. I don't even t hink those are made anymore. Maybe you lucky and find one on Ebay.
No human eyes had rested on this thing for at least, 2 decades.
And look at all the junk INSIDE of it!

Do you know how long - how LONG, I've been looking for something like this? Literally - years. About 4 years if I'm trying to be accurate about it.
Not saying things like this aren't out there but when I go looking, I usually find 2 catergories:
CRAP - if you sneeze to hard, it falls apart; ie, I made a mistake and walked into a Pier 1. They sell "furniture". I saw something in there for $500 that, where quality is concerned, I wouldn't even put in doghouse. I see similar things at the Crate & Barrels of the world but it's not real wood.
BIG BUX
High end things that cost my pension - that I just can't afford.

I begged my mother for it.
She said yes, I cleaned it out in 10 seconds flat and threw it in the truck. These pics aren't that great in clarity so u prolly can't see, but they dont MAKE stuff like this anymore. Not for the 99% like to be able to afford.
It's pretty dinged up - I didn't care. Thank goodness I was driving our truck that day - I drove that thing back to NY in 2 seconds flat and put it in the garage because I knew exactly what my plan for it was.
Look at the damage - most of it probably from being in that damn store room since the devil was a boy.
Just goes to show u how strong and well made this thing is - u could throw it off a roof top and nothing would happen to it I don't think.
I called 3 furniture repair places for an estimate to have it refinished. So much for my grand plans. The bids were:
$975
$850
$700
The estimates were ALL subject to change (increase) depending on what they found underneath.
I was like - <span style="font-style: italic">oh really ...</span>
Buh<span style="font-style: italic"> bye</span> ...

Gen - not always as easy to refinish furniture as it seems.
If you're not a professional, you really have to have the quality TIME to do it and really think out the steps that need to be taken. Before anything is done, you have to strip the furniture. That can take a little bit of study: what kind of stripper to use, how much to use, how long to leave it on, the sanding, being careful with the grain, sanding evenly so as to not create any dips or uneven areas - manually sand or by machine ... so on and so on and so on ...
I started with the handles ... after some leg work, I bought this - at, of all places - AUTO ZONE!
Blue Magic/7 oz. metal cream polish
Man oh man did it do the trick. Come to find out, it's made to polish chrome wheels. I kid you not, after about 2 hours (TWO flippin' hours) of polishing ...
